Knicks are said to be interested in a 6th man type. Assuming there is no move that vaults the Mavs into contention, what does the board think about a deal that's focused on the future?
THJ --> NYK
Grimes --> HOU
Eason + Fournier --> DAL

I think its light on Mavs side. Both Eason and Grimes are worth more than Timmy. My first thought is that I would be willing to add Hardy and seconds to make this happen, but we would be really thin on bench scoring.

Interesting story coming out of Europe today that Karlo Matkovic is leaving Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana to head to the NBA. This apparently isn't just a rumor, because the club shared the news.
Matkovic's NBA Draft Right are retained by the New Orleans Pelicans. They could sign him using the Second Round Pick Exception or they have some of the Non-Taxpayer MLE.
Matkovic has had a big year in Europe. The 22-year-old big man has blossomed as a scorer, rebound and rim protector.
It's not clear if Matkovic has a deal in place with New Orleans, or if there's a trade lined up to send his draft rights somewhere else.
Pelicans do have an open roster spot and sit about $2.7M under the luxury tax. And they could use another big man for depth.

The Hornets are currently listening to trade offers on Miles Bridges and PJ Washington, per @wojespn ( https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/th...0644186813).
It would appear likely both will be moved by Thursday.

Tobias Harris is a top target for the Pistons, per @JLEdwardsIII ( https://theathletic.com/5248955/2024/02/...as-harris/).
It’s more likely Detroit will pursue Harris in free agency this summer than a trade before the deadline.
Detroit will have around $60 million in cap space this offseason to retool their roster.

It’s “very likely” Bruce Brown will be traded from the Raptors this week, per @wojespn ( https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/th...0644186813).
The Knicks and Lakers continue to be mentioned as top contenders to acquire Brown.

DeMar DeRozan is a player to monitor leading up to the trade deadline, per @ShamsCharania on @RunItBackFDTV.
The Bulls are open to fielding calls on DeRozan as extension talks went nowhere.
If DeRozan isn’t traded by Thursday, there’s a real possibility he walks in free agency.

If the Mavs don't make a trade or unable to, it is probably best if there are not a lot of trades. Keeps a lot of the guys on the market for this summer.
I know you have to give up something to get something, but I would be real careful adding our limited assets to trades. There are some deals I would be ok with, but most of them are done with my Mavs glasses on. In reality, the Mavs would probably give up more than what I am thinking.
I would love to get DFS back. I just wouldn't want to add the asset the Nets would want. I think PJ could potentially be a buy low candidate who plays better with a different team. He is going to cost at least 1 and maybe two of our assets though. That makes him more tricky for me.
If a trade is made, I would be ok losing Hardaway. Even if it meant we are worse off this year. So if you could find a trade for him (maybe a 3 team trade) to get a guy who better fits here moving forward. I would be ok with that. Hardaway may still have limited value...but that is just a guess.

Also, I think Philly could be a realistic team to jump into a three team. Who knows know with Embid out now. They have several expirings who would interest me. It is tough because we have no expirings to match. But if they had to include Batum or Covington in a trade to make the #'s work, I would be interested in those type of players for a short term fix.

They should absolutely use those deal to clean their cap. It would be a far better move than adding somebody like Nick Richards (and I like him). The Hornets/Magic have absolutely no salary cap pain. They can absorb Williams + Holmes + Green + THJ for Washington and expiring contracts. The flexibility we gain in the summer would enable us to (re-)sign Goga and DJJ and still have enough wiggle room for the major summer trade.
Doncic/Hardy/Lowry
Irving/Harris
DJJ/Exum
Washington/Kleber
Lively/Goga
Call me crazy, but I think this is a better (balanced) team than our current one.

To do what exactly as a short term fix? Lift us to homecourt advantage for the play-in?
All trades should be made with a simple premise:
1. Set yourself up better for the future!!!
2. Try not to sacrifice too much on-court talent in the process short term.
That´s it. I have absolutely no interest in any 30+ player, unless he´s a star that elevates us into title contention. Call it the DeRozan line. Though I could get on board with DeMar depending on the price tag for his extension. He´d also provide some much needed veteran leadership.

There is no way Caruso fetches an OG package i.e. two good young starters and 2nds.
I checked in on Barrett and Quickley and they're both putting up big-time numbers. Barrett in particular looks like an entirely different player, which speaks a lot to the context of stats. He didn't all of the sudden learn how to score efficiently and rebound. Same player, different context.
If the Mavs want in on Caruso, there's no denying he is a defensive force though. Is he worth two good young players who could start? Is Caruso worth Green and Hardy? I'd probably do that deal if Caruso were more durable. I don't think you can count on him for more than 24 MPG and he misses too many games.

I think Batum or Covington would both work well here. Either would serve as a bridge to either OMax developing or until we could trade for a better 4. As both are expiring contracts, we could either re-sign them this offseason or let them walk and that might allow us to re-sign DJJ.
If we could obtain Covington or Batum in exchange for Holmes and our two 2nd-rounders, I think that would be a winning move. The 76ers would presumably be targeting a player from a third team as they wouldn't be willing to take on the Holmes contract directly.

Caruso is an elite role player on a great contract. He is one of the league's best defensive players and is hitting over 40% from 3. He is shooting more than ever before and hitting on excellent efficiency. He can actually handle the ball a bit. He's absolutely worth two first round picks.
I would gladly trade our 2027 1st and OMax for Caruso and worry about fit later.

that is fair and I wouldn't disagree too much. I am not talking about giving up any of our assets but just something that could be a slight improvement, but I understand your thoughts above. We lack expirings, so this would make any deal more difficult.
In a different world we are sitting here and maybe Grant Williams is not a championship team starter but is a productive, important role player, Omax has been given small doses of minutes and has shown potential, Jaden had made a step and while his rest of the game is work in progress he is scoring the ball when given the opp. Exum has been healthy and is playing 20-25 minutes of ball blending in with stars. Kyrie has played in 75% of the games. If most of the above happened, we would be in a much better place. Even if the record was only a few games better. Because they haven't happened, it feels like we are in danger of a panic trade.

From Fischer:
“While Dallas is indeed looking for forward help, the Mavericks have not shown interest in (Miles) Bridges or Nets forward Dorian Finney-Smith in recent conversations, sources said.”
“PJ Washington is another Hornets forward who’s commanding inquiries from rival teams, with Dallas among the interested suitors, sources said.”
Over this past weekend, the Clippers’ purported pursuit of Washington became noted across the league. But according to various league personnel involved in these talks, Los Angeles has not had a meaningful conversation with Charlotte in quite some time about Washington. One source went so far as to describe that Clippers-Washington connection as “bad info.”
