Trade & FA 2023-24: DJJ: I Plan On Coming Back This Summer
|

I was listening to an earlier Zach Lowe podcast and they were talking about Siakam to Indy and whether it was a good trade or not. Lowe said Indy is not a FA destination. They don't get involved in the star FA route. He also said waiting also has its challenges because if that player is too good then you have all the pick hoarding teams who can outbid Indy's best offer.
It made me think of the Mavs. Right now, Mavs don't have great assets to offer. This summer they should have 3 first round picks. But if there is a player that OKC, Houston, Utah also want they can likely outbid us. So there is a fine line of targeting a good player who fits us well vs a player who is really valuable that the pick hoarding teams also want. It could lead us missing out if pick the wrong horse.

It is like washing the old car you are thinking about trading in for a new car. Suddenly, now clean, the old car doesn't seem that bad. Especially when you consider the cost of the new car: Does this mean that DFS's cost is down to matching salary? Hot dog, let's go get him!

Is Wiggins a two way player? In his 10 NBA seasons, he has been a two way player maybe 2 of them. He is currently a zero way player, terrible on both sides of the court, right after he got his big contract. He is making over 100 million over the next 4 years, and if he decides not try like he has done much of his career (including this season) then that contract is an albatross and one of the worst in the NBA. The red flags are huge on this one.
Not expecting many here to like this deal but it would totally revamp the wings, adding a ton of length, rebounding, and starter-level talent.
Hield and IND couldn't come to terms on an extension but a high volume movement shooter is ideal in that system. Carlisle knows how to use THJ. He plugs right in on a declining contract, giving DAL a large expiring to send along with Curry, who has a team option next year, to WAS. That's a basic 3-team deal. Separately, DAL sends two underperforming players to GSW for an underperforming player. THJ --> IND DAL '27 + CURRY (team option) + HIELD (expiring) --> WAS WILLIAMS + HOLMES --> GSW WIGGINS + KUZMA --> DAL ===================== LUKA | KYRIE | WIGGINS | KUZMA | LIVELY EXUM | GREEN | DJJ | KLEBER | POWELL | HARDY | OMAX Obviously you'd have to hope alphas Luka + Ky and Kuzma's scoring take the pressure off Wiggins so he get's back to being the player he can be. This deal would limit future flexibility but as we've seen, any contract can be moved if your front office is creative enough.

It is not that they don't exist, it is just that the Front Office just decided too late to prioritize them. So I agree you can build a good defensive team around Luka and Kyrie, but it does really limit your options. It doesn't help that your third best/most expensive player is offense only as well. It means every player you bring in needs to be a plus defender. Going down the list of true big wings, not a lot of them fit this category. Guys like WCJ are tweeners that are questionable perimeter defenders. Guys like PJ should be good defenders, but there is question as to if that is really the case. We acquired one this offseason (GWill) who has turned out not to be the defender we hoped. When you go down the list of available big wings, there are not that many that are clearly plus defenders.

The Houston Rockets are interested in Mikal Bridges and are open to trading a combination of the draft picks acquired in the James Harden deal back to Brooklyn to facilitate a trade, per @MikeAScotto “Recently, the Houston Rockets were among the teams to register trade interest in Bridges, league sources told HoopsHype. Houston was prepared to send back several of Brooklyn’s unused remaining draft picks from the James Harden trade, but talks never got to that stage because the Nets declined to entertain anything for Bridges when Houston inquired.” Kevin Gray Jr. (@KevinGraySports) “…rival executives who’ve spoken with HoopsHype believe Brooklyn could potentially garner multiple second-round picks in exchange for Royce O’Neale.” Mavericks have 2 2nd Rd picks, Royce O’Neale is 30, goes 6’6-6’7 & is on an expiring contract, would you make that move? #MFFL

Its like you combined my worst nightmares into a single trade. This is tongue in cheek, but its like you paid a first round pick to get a taller Timmy and put him in the starting lineup where he doesn't belong, and then paid 100+ million for Christian Wood.

He plays defense, makes 3s and can even distribute a little bit. Not a bad rebounder. The real issue is what contract we can send out. They are probably looking for expiring.

The Chicago Bulls are not anticipated to execute a major trade and will most likely retain their core group of players, per @DarnellMayberry “With a week remaining before the NBA’s trade deadline, few within or around the Chicago Bulls organization anticipate the franchise making a major move. If the Bulls swing a deal before the Feb. 8 deadline, most will be surprised. It’s not that the Bulls can’t make a trade, but there’s a prevailing belief that the front office won’t commit to something substantial.” (01-31-2024, 11:18 AM)KillerLeft Wrote: What in the world are we doing??? People love throwing their money away and Vegas will happily take bets. Heat are on a freaking horrific loss streak. I think 8 in a row? No way they trade Jimmy though.

The Washington Wizards are not demanding two first-round picks for Kyle Kuzma, and the asking price may be lower, per @TheAthletic “League sources maintain Washington has been holding out for two first-round picks for Kuzma, though team sources indicate that is somewhat overblown. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.” Quote:Smitty Player wise I don't mind that deal. Especially since I was defending Dinwiddie hard the other day. But the Mavs essentially push their expiring contracts to this offseason and free up 29 mil. What could they even do with that?
