Fischer has been on every side of this question - including the "I don't know" side - since saying Brunson is basically a "done deal" to Dallas. The only thing clear is that Fischer (or his sources he listens to) don't know the answer.

Right before I went to bed in idk July 2016, Woj said the Mavs were the "frontrunners" to Hassan Whiteside. I went to sleep thinking, "we have him!" Early next morning, right before I go out for a run, I look at my phone and Woj posts just mins before that Whiteside re-signs with the HEAT! Total mind****.
And we all experienced the DeAndre Jordan fiasco. Nothing official until it's official!

Reminder that more often than not the inability to sign a player prevented them from making an even bigger mistake. Whiteside and DAJ on near max deals...yuck

So let's say for the sake of argument that Dallas S&Ts Brunson to NY for Reddish, Noel, and our 23 pick. Then they get Payton with the taxpayer MLE and keep Pinson. The roster would look something like this:
Luka / Payton / Hardy
Dinwiddie / THJ / Pinson
Bullock / Reddish / Green
DFS / Maxi / Bertans
Wood / Noel / Powell
I have Ntilikina as the odd man out, but maybe they move someone else in the 3rd column to make room. That's not a bad 15-man roster. And they'd also have all of their future picks back for trade opportunities as they arise.

Fischer is linked in and he reports what he hears. He was saying teammates were very confident JB was back. But apparently he is now listening to other sources that are saying the opposite. Stein has already said this is a toss up, essentially Fischer is affirming that and maybe saying NYK is the leader.
I personally feel like Rick Brunson running to MacMahon on April 25 was a sign that JB was likely gone. We will see if that proves to be true or not.
NOTE: Stein and Fischer are too connected for this to just be agent fluff IMO. There is also a very strong possibility that JB has not personally decided and no one actually knows where this will end.

If he signs with the Knicks I look forward to him suffering every game with that joke of a franchise.

I think that makes great sense if that is how the Brunson deal works out. Hardy could be a two way, which would alleviate the issue for the 15th slot.
I’m not sure Dinwiddie is necessarily the starter in the scenario outlined. Not enough playmaking in the second unit.

If JB is out, I still think SD is the 6th man.

True. I could see THJ getting that starting job back, anyway. Although now that you mention it, if Hardy is a 2-way I might prefer Dragic over Ntilikina still for the same playmaking reasons.

This is what Fischer said about Kyrie. This is in no way discredits Fischer. People just don't want to believe what they don't want to believe.

The evidence is pretty clear: JB is a toss up. Nobody really knows how this ends.

Not that it changes anything, Fischer actually said it was the SAME sources that told him Brunson would stay in DAL, now did a 180 saying things are shifting in NY's favor.
Fischer also said Kyrie was gonna opt out.
He's been very topsy turvy with rumors. Key word: rumors.

I didn't realize he said the same people changed their tune. Doesn't that concern you?
Fischer only seems topsy turvy. He is simply reporting what he hears and the problem is people are usually guessing (even if an educated guess) and there are many sources out there. I am glad he shares what he hears. But at the end of the day "sources" don't make the decisions. Kyrie does. JB does. So we wait and we see.

If Fischer tells US that X is going to happen, he can't go back and say "Well, that was what someone said to me." Or, "It's true, and I broke the story - until we find out it might not be true"? No. It doesn't work that way.
Part of the job is to know the reliability and level of knowledge (or lack of) for your sources, and TO REPORT ACCORDINGLY rather than just regurgitate at face value as it being truth.

Fischer used strong language such as "Brunson to Mavs is basically a 'done deal', teammates are expecting him back, etc." It is a pretty big 180. Now, Fischer's trying to be a tad bit more careful with his words just in case it comes back around.
Lets look at the timing, it was only after the Knicks made cap saving moves on drat night that things started to "shift" Brunson to NYK. It's been the hot topic the last few days and now Fischer's "sources" are quite possibly riding that momentum. But it may not be real and only agent-driven. We'll see.

That should happen but has seemingly gone by the wayside in the Twitter era.

If the Spurs really do send Dejounte to ATL for Gallo+ picks it sure would indicate they are going full team tank. Wonder if we could incentivize Pop to bring back Bertans so we could offload his contract.
