Quote:Dinwiddie and THJ both being high salary scorers that aren’t defenders means the Mavs might want to try and turn one of them into something else
This is 100% what the tea-leaves are showing me as well.
If JB is re-signed, then SD or THJ should be outgoing in a trade this summer if you can get any kind of decent return.

Any chance we could somehow swing a trade for Jerami Grant?

I personally don't think Grant is a two-FRP-improvement on THJ. I honestly am not certain he is a one FRP improvement on THJ, but I could see doing one FRP because positionally he is a big improvement for the current DAL team.

Stein says the Mavs will prioritize more wing help but will also explore the possibility of signing Goran Dragic.
it certainly appears if dallas is looking for wing help and may look into signing Dragic that there may be some more moves. THJ, Green, etc.
We have roster spots for those, but not sure it works in reality with another wing and Goran added to the current roster.

I totally agree with this in theory, but the problem is what you want in return is defense. Because both of those guys are negative assets (particularly Bertans) and we don't have any assets to attach to them (except maybe Green has some value) then you are looking at trading them for an overpriced player. The problem is its rare for a good defensive player to be overpriced. It always seems to be the offensive players that are overpriced. If anybody can think of any player that is good at defense yet overpriced in Timmy's price range, I would love to hear it. That is going to make it really tough to convert Timmy into a defensive player. It can be done in the future when we have access to all of our picks and Timmy's contract looks better, but I have not heard a name yet that makes sense (and I can't think of one either).
The closest I can think of are going back to Tobias or Hayward who are not good defenders, but better than Timmy, overpriced and something we might be able to do without adding picks.

I think him basically being THJ offensively, and Bullock defensively make a huge difference to the team dynamics. He becomes that third long wing to rotate with Bullock and DFS as your defensive wing specialists, and offensively his shot count with the Mavs probably go back closer to what it was before he became more featured for Detroit like 2 years back, where his efficiency was fantastic shooting nearly 40% from 3 with around 60% TS.

Wouldn't touch Dragic unless we trade Brunson in a trade that didn't get a playmaker back and couldn't find a better cheap PG. Luka, Brunson, Dinwiddie and Ntilikina is more than enough. Would like to see Ntilikina get a chance at more minutes.

I think that's a reasonable assumption. The stated reason Dallas didn't sign Dragic when he was waived was that there wasn't enough playing time for him at PG after they signed Dinwiddie. It appears that calculus may be changing.
Then again, it's also possible Dragic will simply be a culture signing to fill an open roster spot. Boban out, Dragic in.

I will be real surprised if there is any thought of playing Wood anywhere other than the 5. I don't think this team has any thoughts on targeting another starting center. They might get a young up and coming center with the MLE, or a vet bruiser for the min. Along with Wood, that would put them in a much better situation from a playoff center standpoint.
Also, I have seen a couple of suggestions to trade for Terrance Ross. If that is just to eat a bad contract then fine, but I'm not sure that guy would see any time on the court. He is terrible on defense and his three point has fallen off to the point where he is useless on offense as well.

Agreed.
I like Grant, always have. I think he's the exact type of player that's missing from this roster, and would happily trade Hardaway for him, but I personally don't think he's worth even one first in that exchange, especially given the Mavs' asset situation.
They're almost out of the woods on the Porzingis mistake. One more year and they'll have picks to offer (or use) along with some player assets that will hopefully have gained in value. I'm generally not excited about the idea of them promising future picks for some non-star that would extend this situation, even for a player I really like.

You might be right - I see where you're coming from with that.
But, I think this logic assumes that they'd want Dragic to sign here to be in the top 8-9. At this point, I'm not sure that's the case. As we discussed in another thread, I think their thinking might be to replace Burke with him, for insurance. He is very old, after all, and if he's ok with that type of role, doing it here with Luka might seem pretty good to him. I guess it's just a matter of what type of offers he's getting. Are we absolutely sure some other team is offering him another "first guard off the bench" role?
I LOVE Dragic. But, I don't love this long in the tooth version of him more than Dinwiddie. You could very well be right, but I think it would be a mistake for them to do that.

Completely agree. We need to show some patience. We made a big move with Wood to address the center issue. A tax MLE move to improve the defense would make sense. That will be a better team with more depth next season. Then we can make the big move next offseason when we have access all of our picks and in a better situation contract/asset wise.

Couldn't agree more. Dragic is the 4th guard to me. In addition to, not a replacement level guy for losing/trading Brunson/Dinwiddie

Thing is, I think I've given up on the Mavs actually valuing draft picks the way they actually should. Thought it was Donnie, but it's definitely Cuban. The more I think about it, the more I really don't like the idea of Brunson starting with Luka defensively moving forward, especially with Wood now on the team. I kinda hope they find a way to trade him, or if not, have him forced to the bench, even though you don't necessarily want to be paying a bench player what he will likely get. Grant could do the latter, a Luka/Bullock/Grant/DFS/Wood lineup looks phenomenal in terms of fitting our defensive scheme.

The Brunson defense issue is a concern, but I don't think its one to address now. From an asset perspective, its imperative that he get re-signed. At that point I don't see any chance he is not starting. I think we will have a lot more information next offseason. Wood may not even pan out and we may pivot to a defense first center. Brunson may end turning into Fred Vanvleet defensively (probably not). If its determined that the fit is just not there, then you can trade him with picks for that elite 2 way player.
