Don’t write off the Westbrook trade idea. Lakers really need shooting, and we have that to spare (Bertans, THJ who was shopped at deadline). Their bench is so bad, they might even covet Sterling and/or Boban.
Besides, Westbrook only has 2 years left on that deal. I can think of way worse moves.

I think Westbrook is on the last year of his deal. If you centered the deal around THJ/Bertans + filler, I wouldn't expect compensation back in the form of picks back from the Lakers. So what's the plan for the salary savings in '23-34? THJ+Bertans would wipe about $35M off the books but Jalen is going to eat up around $20M should he resign. That puts your committed salary at about $106M. I'd add around $8M as I'm assuming we'll extend Maxi.
If that's a route the Mavs want to pursue, I'd much rather kick the John Wall tire. Lakers are probably more motivated though.

I mean Bertans is +14.8 in the series. Playing pretty well as a stretch 4/5. Mavs have the best DefRtg with Bertans on the floor, and he is shooting 39 % from 3.
Suns really hasn't figured out the Kleber/Bertans combo, those 2 are doing their thing on the Suns so far. They are doing similar things as in the regular season, where the combo was +15.7 in 128 min.
+20 in 27 min together
131.6 OffRtg
111.1 DefRtg
Westbrook is unplayable. Bertans is atleast useable.

How about
MAVS TRADE
THJ
Powell
Green
'22 1st
to HOUSTON for
Christian Wood
Eric Gordon
Mavs get a young starting stretch-C and a veteran guard for the bench. Rockets get two high-character veterans to help their young team and a couple more young assets.

I legit cannot think of a worst move right now this summer than to trade 3 valued role players for Russell Westbrook.
14x All-Star, 12x all-NBA, 1x MVP, 1x Finals MVP, 1 NBA Championship: Dirk Nowitzki, the man, the myth, the legend.

....but you won´t get Wall, unless you include young players or picks. They have no motivation to move Wall for long-term contracts, otherwise they´d be a great option, too. Lakers on the other hand desperately need depth, shooting and LeBron has the power to push through a win now move, without thinking about the future consequences.

Bleacher Report has a story out adding Washington to the Brunson discussion. It talks in terms of one of KCP or Kuzma and one of Rui or Avdija. Give me KCP (recall the 35 he dropped on the Mav’s this season) and Avdija (a secondary creator who plays good D but doesn’t have a shot yet). I think I can make the BYC numbers work for something close to a 4 year/$100mm deal for JB. We’d need to add someone like Brown to the deal, but Washington actually has two TPE’s to help with deal design and a lot of holes in their roster to fill.
KCP plays good D and hits his 3’s at a pretty good rate. He’s expiring, So, this is potentially just a deal for Deni if you let KCP go after a year. I’m a little intrigued by Isaiah Todd as a PF prospect and wouldn’t mind it if he were added to the deal.
I’m not saying losing JB is something I want to do. But, if he WANTS to go, such a deal is more attractive than what I think we can get out of NY. It is clearly better than what we’d get from Detroit. If we also did the Gobert deal discussed yesterday involving Bertans, Powell, Reggie and two picks. We’d look something like this:
Luka/SD
KCP/Green
Avdija/THJ
DFS/Todd
Gobert/Maxi

That team has no offense/play-making, but it improves our asset base significantly and that´s why I say Yes to Washington, but no interest in Gobert. We´ll have to take a step back to take a step forward.
I also assume this implies Beal leaves Washington, cause otherwise they cannot afford such a deal. Therefore a S&T gives us significant leverage. I want KCP + Smith + Gafford + 10th pick.
Take Williams at #10. Moore at #26.
Doncic/Dinwiddie/Ntilikina
KCP/THJ/Green
Bullock/Moore/Brown
DFS/Kleber/Bertans
Gafford/Wiliams/Powell
..and now you still have ALL your future picks to do a major trade for a true Robin. Maybe something around KCP+Powell (both expiring) and a few future picks.

The thought being that Brunson wants to move on because he does not want to play next to a high usage player, so he is going to Washington and play with Beal?

I doubt Brunson is going anywhere for the duration of his next contract if the Mavs have any say in the matter.
If he wants out, this is his chance, but I doubt he does.

Anyone would be crazy to not jump at the chance to play with Kuz.

I love me some Brunson. For a while now I've been on the trade Brunson for a wing upgrade. However, I think I just moved over to camp keep him. He's a winner and I've always like that about him. I was wondering if his size would hinder him. But, he is showing in this series that he can keep that play going under any circumstances. He and Luka make a really good back court pairing.
That said, they need more help. But, with Luka I'm building this team similar to his Real Madrid teams. Complementary players are what he needs. He is a special kind of player. He's starting to really show that killer instinct now too. I'm loving it.
I have to also add that I was completely wrong about Kidd. Even Rick said when leaving that Kidd was the guy for Dallas. He was absolutely right. Since he left the Lakers they stink. And he is taking this team to new heights. So glad I was wrong about Kidd.
We didn't make the cut but thanks for all the support!

Sometimes it seems like you are more concerned with collecting assets than winning basketball games. We are currently tied up in the playoffs with the best team in the NBA. I feel like we would be way better off making small incremental changes the next offseason or two, and then make the big swing if necessary when the bad contracts have mostly run their course and we have access to all our picks.

I agree. No need to jettison off the 2nd best player on the team for some expirings and picks. Find a good upgrade at the 4 or 5 spot and roll with that for next year would be a significant change to the team.

I think it's pretty safe to say now that the new big they get in the offseason needs to be a shooting threat. 5 out is more important for Luka than an elite rim runner. The offense with Powell is too easily countered by a good rim protector. Clippers guarded roll men really well with Batum as their 5 last year too. Defense is cool and all but just make the offense as Luka friendly as possible. If the Mavs had Gobert, he and Ayton would be neutralizing each other, but I'm pretty sure the paint would be clogged for Luka/JB. Need to keep it clean.
Still plenty of the usual targets. Wood Collins Hayes Turner. That actually makes a real sentence. Hayes' shot still a WIP but I'll still include him due to the perfect ceiling. I'm out on the non-3 point shooting bigs. Maybe throw Randle in there too since he's likely getting moved.

Speaking of Batum, I'd love to swipe him for the taxpayer MLE if they can land one of the bigs you mentioned. It could be possible now that LAC has extended RoCo.

I mean this is the roster thread. Isn't this what we are supposed to be doing here?
