I think we have nerfed our expectations of KP based on his health. If he can manage a season or two of consecutive health, then imagine his bubble numbers as a norm. As our second best player. Holy sh......... Our fingers are crossed, but I think that guy that we saw, on a consistent basis, is a top 20 player in the NBA.

A 7'3 small forward (he plays like it) shooting over everyone and defensive anchor. Average 30 PPG and 10 TRG in regular season ooooff

Thats a top 10 player.

Showing my ignorance here, having never had a knee problem, but why wait until October to have the surgery? Did I see it was not related to the meniscus problem or other injury? Was it something that only became apparent as he tried to recover?

I'm just trying to understand the timing. If he'd had the surgery in September, we would be talking about how great it was to have our core 5 ready to go.

Because there was a chance it might heal on its own with no surgery, which is always preferable to cutting someone open. All parties did the right thing, IMO.

I'm not sure, either. But, my guess would be that the injury was minor enough to give them hope that the BEST option was to avoid surgery altogether, and that possibility was preferable enough to warrant giving it some time to see if it would heal on its own. Remember, he actually played on the injury against LA - not only staying in the game after it occurred, but coming back and playing the NEXT game, too. Then, they didn't seem to be 100% positive that he couldn't play the rest of the series, at first.

I tore my meniscus in a pickup game during college. The doctor told me to see a specialist and probably have surgery, but I never did - I'm not an athlete, and I had just come off of my parents' insurance.  In less than a month, it healed to the point where I could walk just fine and I didn't even have to think about it. All my life I have waited for some sign of consequence born from the choice to ignore it, but so far, nothing. I honestly don't think a meniscus injury is all that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

There are a lot of reasons. One reason is that after injury, there is a lot of swelling around the area. This swelling could muddy up scans and make them harder to read. By waiting and letting the swelling go down naturally, it allows docs to get a clearer picture of the damage and aftermath, which can influence whether or not surgery is even needed.

Another reason like Tyler and KL touched upon is that with an injury to the meniscus, there is always a chance that it could heal on it's own without surgical intervention. Given the fact that KP had a surgical repair, it meant that the tear to KP's meniscus was relatively small and in a good area where docs could sew up the tear without compromising the knee.

KP already doing some light on court stuff so soon also points to the fact that his tear was relatively minor. All good signs. I'm glad the Mavs are taking it slow though.

I agree with the above and yes the idea was that it might heal on its own. It was worth the risk to wait a bit. Meniscus tears are evidently pretty common for NBA players, some guys don't even know they have a tear. The issue with KP of course (and to an extent any professional athlete) is that he is putting a lot of strain on his knees during the course of a season.

His unusual frame and play style make you wonder if his body can hold up. Maybe it can maybe it can't but I am optimistic that Mavs will get it figured out. If they give him basically the Kawhi treatment at age 25 then maybe his body can hold up. I certainly think it can. Mavs should be in a position where KP never has to play back to backs, ever. If the Mavs aren't good enough to rest him on those nights then they aren't good enough to not rest him on those nights if that makes sense. KP is a guy you want to manage minutes carefully every single year to keep him fresh for the playoffs. Mavs are a smart organization and can give him the best shot to be healthy year to year.

Repair.

I still love the trade and what KP brings to the team. But he's also that boyfriend you just can't trust. Will he be there when you really need him? I think this is the year he must earn that trust.

Makes me think about TY Chandler. Before coming to DAL, he had a series of leg/foot problems. Enough that OKC cancelled a trade because of medical concerns. After he got here (after 8 years in the league), there was no more than an occasional night off due to soreness, IIRC. I think he's been mostly healthy since leaving as well.

I guess I'm suggesting that strengthening his body plus maturation of his body could result in a player available for a high percentage of games, even B2B's. Patience is called for, I think.

TC played 20+ games only twice since 2008: 74 in his 1st season with Dallas, 75 in his 2nd season with Dallas  Big Grin
He had 66 games twice with Knicks and Suns, 62 games in 66 season games with Knicks.
He averaged 27.7 MPG in his first stint here, so having Haywood helped us a lot
He was fairly healthy there, and if we can get 4 or 5 years of healthy KP, I will be thrilled

Yeah, I was working from memory/perception. Went and read about him after posting. Some of the post-Dallas stuff was other injuries (neck, hamstring, etc.) but he did tweak a knee in 2013.

I agree with the Haywood observation. IMO, he is a forgotten warrior during the championship. He was able to provide quality minutes when TY was resting/in foul trouble/not effective. Given that he was told that he'd be the starter when he signed on, he was the epitome of a team player.

IF DAL can get ~75 games/year from KP, then I think this will be a very successful team. I mean, even Luka is going to get rest days, regardless of what the league says. You can always dress 'em, start 'em, then sit 'em after 5 minutes.
