Well done Rick!

Love to see Rick go to bat for KP like this. Post-up debate aside it sounds like the unicorn is dealing with some foot soreness after tonight's game so I'm going to go ahead and predict he misses Saturday's tilt against Golden State. Gotta be ready to deal the Lakers their fifth consecutive loss (!!) On Sunday.

I really hope we manage to blow them out so Luka gets to sit the 4th and get some rest for the Lakers, especially coming off his injury. In fact I wouldn't mind if they sat both Luka and KP for that game. I know we might be getting a bit ahead of ourselves, but the team has shown more than enough without Luka to beat the GSW, and that Lakers game could be massive, especially confidence wise for this team going 2-1 against one of the best teams in the league, and psychologically knowing it actually should be 3-0.

He looks like Gobert on defense and yet has all the offensive tools of a shooting guard and more. Still think Mavs need one more big. Mavs bigs played really well for the most part. Rick again decided to go small late for a long stretch to let the Raps back in it. Maybe if we had one more big he wouldn't do that. Love me some KP.

Also I am tired of media people saying KP needs to play like a max player. He may not be shooting super efficiently on offense but his defense is just amazing. I will take this player all day every day because he plays winning basketball. I am so happy he has bought into Rick's system. He isn't going to be Knicks KP but that's not necessarily a problem. He is going to be a 20/10 guy with suffocating defense and his efficiency numbers will go up over time.
I agree. KP is restarting a young career here in Dallas. He is going to be awesome (barring serious injury) for years to come. We are less than 1/2 of 1 season into his career (take 2) and he is already a force to be reckoned with.

This is why we need another competent big.  The net with KP is 7.7 and without him it is 4.7.  He's pretty harmful to the Team O while playing less than 2/3's of Team minutes.  He's pretty impactful to Team D while playing less than 2/3 of Team minutes.  It is inevitable he will miss minutes and even when healthy there is need for more defensive help from someone who doesn't trash your O.  I think Gorgui Dieng is a really nice fit here.  Below are O-Rating and D-Rating for Dieng and our other bigs:

KP:       104/105
Powell:  135/110
Maxi:     126/111
Boban:  113/107
Dieng:   115/105

These numbers aren't achieved in a vacuum.   The teammates that surround you matter.  I discount Boban's numbers a bit because Carlisle only plays him against certain kinds of opponents.  I think 18 minutes of someone like Dieng would increase the 7.7 point per 100 spread between our O-Rating and D-Rating when KP is healthy.

Remember that those numbers aren´t the actual on court ratings for the mentioned players. O-rating and D-rating are individual stats that aren´t based on +/- numbers.

I can't get away from this when looking at O and D ratings. They are lineup stats, literally a measure of how lineups have performed when a player is on the floor. My opinion is that it would take a decent amount of research and a good sized basketball brain to extract what pure lineup stats mean for an individual. I'm not saying that they mean nothing for the individual, but I have a lot of trouble taking them to mean what we assume simple numbers mean.

Where I do think lineup stats could be useful for folks like us that like to talk basketball: It can be a conversation starter to generate some theories about what's going on with lineups that include KP.

I am all for trading Lee for Dieng and whatever draft assets we can get, if RoCo deal can't be achieved. Also use our TE for a deal with Portland (Hood), Chicago (Felicio) or other and get some additional assets along the way.

THJ (or Dieng) plus additional players, 2020 pick, 2025 pick and the other assets from above might be a decent haul for a trade for someone like Beal, McCollum or Holliday in the summer. Add a decent experienced vet like Gasol, Ibaka, Dragic or Milsap in the MLE and we might be quite set.

Oh really?! Oh, dang, I feel like I've gone through this before. I guess I better go educate myself.

Yep, those numbers are NOT the ones to look at.

NBA.com stats page is the place to look for the real on/off numbers OR the "Play by Play" section on the basketball reference page.

Are the graphs you post based on the basketballreference's Team Ratings?

KP is awesome. Great answers! I think that ends the old conversation about what KP prefers.
