I just don´t get this take. His lack of defense, rebounding and toughness wasn´t on the coaches/gameplan. Him not being able to post up Mann or Jackson isn´t on the coaches. Not like the Mavs did not try it. It´s a playoff series. The Mavs wanted to win. Not showcase KP. The margin of error is small and post ups and isos for a guy that is an league average shooter without a reliable post up game are probably the best way to lose the series in 5 games. We saw how a team that runs the offense through KP looks. Would have been a great option in the pre Luka years because KP lead teams finished with top 5 lottery odds.

Is that really the best option on offense? He obviously doesn´t brick everything but he is shooting low 40s on those kind of shots, turns it over a lot and doesn´t draw any fouls.

Yes, because the alternative is relying on THJ to come through being that guy. THJ is for sure not that guy. Our only shot at beating the Clippers was having bubble KP show up. If we tried to make that happen all series and it didn’t? Then you can start isolating your blame.

He was a lot more engaged in some of the games this series, offensively and defensively (never really in the same game though).

Like I said, if there were teams that wanted him before the playoffs, I don’t think they went away. They might have gained a bit more leverage, but I don’t think our FO will bite if they try to use that leverage.

The thing about KP is that he wasn't that good in New York.  He put up big numbers on a bad team on bad efficiency.  The reason we are all googly eyed over him was because:

1. he was a great rim protector on defense
2. his athletic ability and range at his size gave him great potential

Does he still have that upside after his constant injuries?  He doesn't seem to have that explosiveness or mobility anymore.

Or is he a glorified Harrison Barnes?  HB put up 19/6 but had no impact on winning.  I bet KP can put up an empty 22/7.

He was an all star on that bad team. Not an easy feat. Maybe we need Jeff Hornasek as a coach, the guy that got him playing like an all star.

He was getting a lot of hype in a big market. High volume on below average efficiency. But at least he was a better defender. This years regular season version of KP is the most efficient he has ever been on offense. Why? Because they reduced the midrange and post up volume.

Fun part. When both played in NY KP was scoring 20-22ppg. THJ 17ppg. 19ppg in the season without KP. Similar efficiency.

This year’s more efficient KP had him averaging 20 ppg, he didn’t come close to that in the playoffs. Why? Gameplan.

RE: HOLY KRISTAPS: All Things Porzingis | Would you trade him? - haveitall - 06-07-2021

In 2020 Porzingis averaged almost 24 ppg on .525 shooting. He took 13 shots per game.  2021 he averaged 13 ppg on .472 shooting on 10 shots per game.  In 2020 he averaged almost 8 free throw attempts per game, in 2021 it was less than 3.  So when you look at usage its 21 shots/free throws in 2020 vs. 13 in 2021 which explains why he scored half the points.  This has zero to do with Porzingis as a player and 100% with coaching decisions, schemes.

Just as fun part, both have shown growth and more efficiency as they aged. We could have used both like we did more of in the regular season. THJ scoring 18 ppg off the bench would have also solved a lot of the non-Luka group woes.

RE: HOLY KRISTAPS: All Things Porzingis | Would you trade him? - ItsGoTime - 06-07-2021

Also, THJ off the bench and scoring when Luka went out of the game allows Luka to get more rest.

KP isn´t more efficient on the shots he used to take in NY. RC just changed his role. Less creation. More catch and shoot. More finishing in the paint.

Sooo, we could have used both like we did in the regular season?

No. In the first 2-3 games Kawhi was guarding KP. Smart move from Lue because the Mavs don´t want to run pick and roll with the guy that Kawhi is guarding. Would be an easy switch. Obviously would be a different story if KP could set "real" screens or punish the mismatch against smaller guys. But based on everything we know that´s not the case and the Luka/KP pick and roll would result in a switch.
When the Mavs went big in the following games. The Mavs had a better inside option. Boban can do all the things that KP cannot do on offense. Set screens. Establish position inside. Take advantage of smaller defenders. This is the KP-Powell scenario from last season. KP wasn´t happy because the offense was build around the Doncic/Powell pick and roll. Turning the 2nd big into a spot up shooter /cutter.

Maybe KP could have pulled the trigger on some semi open catch and shoot opportunities. Maybe his teammates missed him on a few occasions. In the end it comes down to KP and his level of play (on both ends, haven´t even mentioned the biggest problem...defense). We can try to find excuses for him or question why  a 7´3 guy cannot score over guards. Why he cannot set a screen. Why he cannot shoot better percentages from midrange and 3-point range.

Although, at least in playoffs, THJ mostly looked a totally inefficient chucker when Luka was not on the floor with him

Respectfully, KP's supposedly awesome bubble playoff is a myth.
He played two and a half games, and missed three and a half.
He played like crap in the first game and got himself tossed.
He shot well in the other two but it's not like he dominated. His best statistical game was an 11 of 18 for 34 pts LOSS.
For context Seth Curry just put up 10 of 17 for 30 pts in a Sixers WIN to knock out the Wizards.

The post up numbers are depressing. Over the last two seasons:

0.85ppc against centers, 37th percentile
0.88ppc against forwards, 12th percentile
1.04ppc against guards,  63th percentile

The screen numbers even more. "When Porzingis sets an on ball screen defenders switch 27% of the time. That´s the most often of all bigs to set at least 1000 screens this season"

Just tweeted about his comments regarding post ups today. Man, he's simply delusional. https://twitter.com/Velleius_NBA/status/1401967615178838027?s=19

Fantastic analysis by Kevin O'Connor.

Most depressing part is league sources saying "there is minimal interest around the league" in KP and teams are "scared off."

Mavs HAVE to dump him, anything else jeopardizes a huge part of Luka's prime career that is upon us. You never know if Luka is going to have a health run like Lebron, Mavs HAVE TO WIN NOW.

How is it that with arguably the best player in the league the Mavs look to be in a dismal situation? I don't trust their roster, I don't trust the GMing, I don't trust the coaching. Depressing.

Guys, one of the "wins" for this season was to get KP into the offseason in relatively good health. That seems to have happened, at least there are no treatments or surgeries being discussed. Big difference from the last few seasons. So, mission accomplished.

I think his future with DAL hinges on what he commits to for the summer. If he has the humility to really embrace the need to evolve, then this is the summer to do it. Work with someone on moves in the post and get comfortable shooting over a defender in your personal space. Go find Dirk's coach and learn how to shoot the one-legged stepback. Spend more time in DAL working with the staff who is paid to help you get better and has probably a better training facility than anything he'll find alone. Maybe get an Olajawon to work with him and help him learn how to act as a big man in today's NBA.

If he says "See ya in September" and disappears into Latvia, the MBT has to wonder if KP is committed enough to be that guy.
