RE: COVID-19: Shams: "Players and league have approved new format." - ClutchDirk - 06-12-2020

National Basketball Players Association leadership told a group of 80-plus players on a call Friday that they do not believe fans will be allowed to attend games during the             2020-21  season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Irving doing this to buy himself and KD another six weeks?

And the Flat Earther shall lead them...

Also, what do China and LeBron say?

I better stop now...

Several points were made on the call, according to sources:
• Anthony stressed unity, having a sole message and allowing the young players in the NBA a voice. At one point, Anthony suggested having all 80 players on the call donating $25,000 to a cause that they wanted.
• McCollum stated that players must be prepared for the financial dip if they choose not to play, and owners completely ripping apart the collective bargaining agreement.
• The NBPA’s leadership stated it is believed no fans will be permitted into games for the entire 2020-21 season.
• Howard stressed to players that playing in Orlando will become a distraction from the issues the country is facing, and that they need to unify and use this moment to create a change.
• Mitchell expressed concerns about playing due to “being behind the 8-ball” having not played five-on-five and being thrust into a competitive environment and eight-game regular season. “We’re taking a big (injury) risk,” Mitchell said. Mitchell is up for a maximum contract extension this summer.

Honestly if these players want change they should all donate 1% of their annual salaries to school projects in black communties and help get kids proper education and college opportunities. Education is like a pandemic. You help 10 children to a college degree, they can spread it to 100 others, who can spread it to 1000....

If they wait for the political and social system to change (anything), then I might point to hundreds of dead elementary school children. The repeated murders of little children could not bring Republicans or/and Democrats to put their differences aside and make a change. Something lawmakers in literally every civilised country in the world (that has suffered just 1-2 of them, not dozens) could agree upon within a month, regardless of their political agenda.

If they don´t play till these protests are over, they´ll be waiting forever. Usually the scumbags in congress would just sit this out, until people get on with their lives. Unfortunately for the them, this time people have no lives to get back to, because they are all unemployed.

So sadly this explosive situation will either continue for many months or people will go back home, because the protests served as a superspreader of Corona virus and people start dying in the thousands again.

Sad

I think you're over blowing the covid thing by miles. In fact, i know you are and there is no such thing as 'systemic racism' currently in place in this country. But hey, if they want to sit out, let them. The rest is mostly bs from athletes a lot of fans are growing tired of, and have been for years now--if football was any sort of precursor.

I am on the verge of giving up all sports.  It was always an escape from stresses of life.  But now they are all disrespecting a flag I gave 20 years of service for and too many gave their lives for.

These rich players have armed security and gated communities and are gonna kneel on my flag?  Enough is enough.  If you wanted to be in politics then go and run for office.  If you area player then play.  Don’t use you playing time to protest.  I will leave your sport.  In your own tine go for it.  But if you kneel before games I will no longer watch.

You did nothing about China except support them.  Hyocrites.

Fair warning players, I am not alone.  Keep your politics away from gameday activities.  Else I am done.

I made no judgment on the severity of Corona virus at all. I talked about the civil unrest, the protests and what the backdrop of Corona means in that regard.

Thank You ThunderMav, for your service to our country.

Maybe the NBA could explore not playing the National Anthem at the start of games in Orlando?  What's the need?  There will not be any fans in the stands.  And multiple games will be played on the same courts back to back to back.  I wonder what will be worse for the NBA, loosing fans for not playing the Anthem or loosing fans because the players take a knee?

Again, Thank You for your service...

Thank you for the kind words.  And I 100% agree with you, if sports would play it while players are in locker room its win/win.  Players can kneel or do whatever they want and fans can honor and respect flag without all the distractions.  Then players could go out in own time and do all they want.  That would be the perfect resolution.  I’d rather have no NA played than played and disrespected.

Just don't let the players disrespect China at all and everyone will be fine.

Guess Kaepernick´s weapon of choice was spot on. Smart boy.

RE: COVID-19: Shams: "Players and league have approved new format." - StepBackJay - 06-14-2020

It's unfortunate but the kneeling stuff has spoiled the whole point of the anthem. I get some ppl here and elsewhere believe they are protesting while also not disrespecting anyone. It's an impasse that just isn't going to ever get resolved. The best thing is to remove the anthem on TV and/or keep players in the locker room to get around this divisive issue. I am sure players can come with other ways to protest or make their voices heard.

I saw Dwight Howard said he will not play. Don't know how this solves social justice but oh well. Maybe we need a thread on players not coming back?

I don’t support going into Orlando. I’m not with the systematic racism and the bulls--t. Something smells a little fishy.”
Kyrie Irving on conference call with NBA players about the season returning, per @ShamsCharania

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Irving is on the first year of a 4 year deal paying him $34MM/year on average. It is a deal he signed willingly as a free, adult male. That's over 1000x the annual income of even a $15/hr minimum wage. That affords him a lifestyle most of us can't even dream about.

If he's really about ending racism and the bulls--t, then I'd like to see him go into some of the rural counties in AL, MS, GA, etc., and spend his contract to support education to help the next generation to have a way out to break the cycle of ignorance and self destruction that goes on today. The marching and protesting will probably get some reforms enacted, but the real problem is not going to be addressed until the disadvantaged can do it themselves.

IMO, this is a bit of a grandstand play by someone who's probably not playing anyway and has nothing to lose.

RE: COVID-19: Shams: "Players and league have approved new format." - Hypermav - 06-15-2020

How would you envision a conversation with a Mavs player who doesn’t want to go to Orlando?
Carlisle: "I haven’t heard this from any of our players. Our guys are excited to get back on the court, and excited for an opportunity to compete. It really stands to reason that once we get to the bubble, that will be as safe an environment as you can possibly have given all the circumstances.
“I’ve heard some of the rumblings, but a lot of it is people in the media just trying to stir up conversations. If guys don’t want to go, I think that’s something they’ll probably take up with their own teams or maybe they’ll talk to the league about, but I’m not hearing it from our guys.”
