Some behind the scenes of Dorian's return. Miss this dude. Not sure if we could have him back this season but if we could then I'd be overjoyed.

Also can anyone explain what Tim was doing here?

Dorian at last nights press conference after the game:

“Right in my face,” he said. “F—!”

To make matters worse, Finney-Smith had dinner plans with Dončić after the game. “I’m just going to take the L at dinner,” Finney-Smith said. “I ain’t gonna talk about basketball.” Usually, that’s Dončić’s dinner rule: No basketball talk. Finney-Smith had a strong suspicion Dončić would break that rule later that evening.

That's a JET defensive miscue there.  I used to go nuts how JET would do something like that or just run next the player as they drove... a police escort to the basket.

Little bit of a change of topic...

It's only been two games, both down-to-the-wire affairs, but can we read anything into 2x DNP-CD for Holmes? There was a small current of hope that he could contribute meaningful minutes at the 4-5, but I don't remember him even getting much burn in the pre-season games. Is there still a chance he could help or is he just filler for a trade?

If I had more faith in Kidd I would say it probably means Holmes is cooked.  But given he is starting DJJ, its hard to trust his rotation decisions are rational.

I thought from the start that Holmes was likely the weakest, defensively, of the Lively/Powell/Kleber/Holmes group. Personally, I don't feel the need to dig too far past that.

Lively is way farther along than we even hoped (there will be times when he's lost, sure, but he's ready to be out there). Powell is much, much better than he gets credit for around here on both ends of the court and imo has always been a better player than Holmes, even before Holmes lost his role in SAC, and Kleber...well, he hasn't looked great so far this season, but I'm sure they're desperate for him to regain some semblance of his past stellar defensive form, because his ability to stretch the floor as a big is unquestionably baked into their plan for this year's team to be good. Losing that hope would represent a major, major blow to their chances of short term success - I feel pretty strongly about that.

To me, taking on Holmes was just the price of acquiring O-Max. No more, no less. It's kind of cool that he happens to play a position likely to need a little help on this roster, but that's not why they made that trade, I don't believe. More of a semi-happy coincidence. They wanted O-Max. The end, period.  I'm going to assume Holmes is mostly washed (or honestly, that he was never that great to begin with) until I have reason to believe otherwise.

I suspect at some point in the season, we will get to see more of Holmes with the regular rotation guys in regular season games. So far we haven’t and there is no amount of confidence we as fans should have in Kidd that would tell us definitively who Holmes is at this point. Him being on the team, for sure is because we wanted OMax, but just because that is the case, doesn’t mean that is who he is.

Luka Dončić says Grant Williams’ defense and communication is the difference maker for the team after 3-0 start.

“I think the best improvement is having Grant on the team… he can guard one through five, anybody, so he’s our leader on defense and we follow him on defense.”

If you can, click on the link and listen to Luka's full answer. The Grant signing might be one of the best of the summer.

Gotta respect the team first players that are focused on winning over getting every possible cent. I don't think there's any amount of his random off court drama that should make his salary less than FVV but here we are.

Let´s not get carried away here. He did not take a team friendly deal. He took the best deal he could have gotten. So far has missed half the games and his play has been alright.

I think all the other moves like Lively, Williams and Green were actually more important for our long-term success. When Williams and Green get an open three I always expect it to get in now and Lively has shown to be more sure handed on offense than he appeared in SL/pre-season. Plus the refs really give him the rookie treatment with some dumb calls on good defensive plays. Hardy will get there, too.

That´s a foundation.

The only thing that's to be determined is how many missed games will Luka and Kyrie miss. There are games they will sit due to nagging injuries they always seem to get.

Williams has been incredible.  He doesn't shot hunt but has very good offense.  Super solid and versatile on defense.  He takes up space which helps others get rebounds.  Way better than I thought when they signed him.  Reminds me a bit of Draymond Green.

Crazy this is the first season we’ve started 3-0 since 2004. Lots of good teams between then and now.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Kyrie has foot sprain - DanSchwartzgan - 10-31-2023

Through 3 games we are 2nd in Points per Game and first in O-Rating at 121.5.  JKidd was quoted the other night as saying we are comfortable playing these games in the 120's.

He better be because the Defense is giving up 116.3 per game (23rd) and the D-Rating is 112.8 (20th).

Pace is sixth and net rating is +8.7 (8th in the league).

Clutch record can make this work in the regular season (I think last night was another clutch game since we were up four until Josh put us up six at the 4:57 mark).  What we don't know yet is whether this is our best play or simply playing to the level of our opponents.  Need to see some games against better opponents to know.

He is a good player and was buds with Luka before the trade.  Seems like almost every move they made was to improve the locker room from a Luka perspective.  Williams was a buddy, history with Curry, Powell and the rookies are hard working types who know their role, Luka actually asked Kyrie to come back, and they ditched Wood and McGee.  So far it seems to be working as Luka is playing his ass off and seems to be happy.  I'm sure wins/losses are a huge part of his mood as well.

Needed to replace DFS from a basketball, locker room and luka buddy perspective and feels like Williams accomplishes all that.  My hope was that Williams would be a DFS upgrade based on his offense being more dynamic and it's definitely looking that way so far.

This is honestly a huge development from Kidd.  Last season a ton of us were screaming to give up on creating a strong defense and just win games by leaning into the offense so it's great to see us change that philosophy.  125-110 scores should be the formula for this roster if we continue this pace.

I would say the fact that these few games are effectively our preseason should mean we aren't playing our best ball yet but we'll find out in time how true that is.  I really think we're working through things all game until Kidd puts in a closing lineup and then we turn it up and in those closing moments we have looked dominant.

I agree with this.  I'm a huge Green fan and would normally be wigged about Kidd not starting him.  But he's getting close to 30 minutes and is part of the most important lineup (which in the end is what matters).

I'd probably go a step further and say there is a priority on bench play when Luka is out.  That means some of our 'firepower' has to be held out of the Luka/Kyrie lineups so that they are available in times when Luka or both Luka and Kyrie are out.  That means Luka is going to have to hold his own during certain stretches when he's with the worst of our pieces so that the best of our pieces are available for other times.

Ultimately, we have to win more segments by a wider margin than the segments we lose and then close strong.  There are multiple ways to win segments.  You can certainly put all of your studs in together to start the game, but then your bench may lose leads and momentum every time they go in.  Or, you play something along the lines of the lineups game that Kidd appears to be playing.  Time will tell.

I agree, it will be good to see some games against tougher opponents. This did happen last year where we played to the level of the opponents we played. I think that’s because we are offense heavy. Difference so far this year is we have the personnel to ratchet up the defense to close the game. I said this in the offseason, if we can keep the game close for 3 quarters, it’s up to Kyrie and Luka to bring it home. That matches their salary and status.

Now, if we can just get those 1st quarters figured out…I have a hunch that that is a Green not starting issue, otherwise we don’t have the personnel to fix it.

This is crazy!

The Mavs, barely even a play-in team, according to many folks on this board, got all the way up to 7th in the league, according to a panel of NBA experts.

Now, it very well might be that they are a bunch of idiots, just like Jason Kidd.

But still, 7th….
