All mighty +/- might be the reason why they ended up on the Mavs roster.

Not to mention (as Dan has pointed out before) they held on to the +/- kings from last year (Luka/Kyrie/Green/Powell/Timmy) and got rid of the +/- duds (Mcgee/Bertans/Bullock/Wood).

Do you think Luka was unhappy with this offseason?

Question for the old heads:

Who was the German poster from the old days...the one who had that gnarly skull as his avatar and who grew to hate the Mavs for "wasting Dirk's career?"

Whoa, I didn't know that.  I can't wait to see how Omax in particular gets used this season.  I watched this the other day and it's just amazing the way he moves around the floor and navigates screens at his size.  It's no wonder they are saying things that elude to him having a shot against Green for minutes.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Center position up for grabs| McMahon: Mavs are encouraged by Lively - IamDougieFresh - 09-26-2023

How can it be possible that I knew OMax was him without looking at +/- ?!?!?!?!?!

I'm not sure, but he definitely had a point. Simple thought exercise: Give Dirk the level of supporting cast of players ranked above him all time. One championship that Dirk won despite Cuban giving him a #2 of... Jason Terry. Embarrassing for Cuban.

Difficult to say. I can't say he was unhappy, but I also can't say he is exactly screaming from joy. He would probably prefer to see the on-court result instead of just projections. But, I think it is very certain he will be very unhappy if they will miss the playoffs again. We can go on and on about what we think, but I am far less convinced than you that this team is a certain playoff team. Also basically all objective projections are puting Mavs in play-in race. None of the teams above them from last season really got (much) worse and several from below got stronger. Denver, Memphis, Sacramento, Clippers, GSW, Minny are very similar than last season. Phoenix is probably better. OKC is certainly better and who knows, perhaps even Pelicans will get some longer stretch of healthy Zion (otherwise same as last year). Houston and probably also SA are better than last season, Portland will likely be around where they were or worse. Utah is probably worse.

As for the assets. I don't think trading 2027 pick mortgages Mavs future in a serious way. They don't need a player that will cost 3 FRP. They need right role players next to their stars. Unprotected FRP could get two of those. Getting a solid center is not blocking any rookie development, as Powell and Holmes would be the ones losing minutes. A better defensive wing then THJ would also not hurt.

I think the statement to do a trade to satisfy Omahen was very out of line, not needed at all. Of course it has nothing to do about me. They need to manage risk of Luka becoming unhappy. Every account says that Luka is an extreme competitor who values winning above everything. Besides, he is also a sore loser.

I wonder. If things don't go as you think they will and Luka asks out. Will you accept that because their moves were the only ones that make sense? Things going wrong include both on-court production as well as injuries, Irving doing off-court Irving things and missing time and similar.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I was so depressed and hopeless about this team last season, and so thrilled to see them finally start to add younger talent, presumably building towards something, that yes, if Luka asks out after this year, I'll still be alright with this summer. It's not what I hope happens, obviously, but then again, I don't want to keep duct taping teams around him, either. They finally did what they probably should've started doing the moment Giannis signed that extension. From my POV, better late than never.

I was on the verge of giving up on the Mavs, even with Luka. Now, I think there would be a glimmer of hope for someone following them even after he leaves (which I don't expect to happen, honestly).

At least there's something to look forward to, now. Some kind of hope.

I can agree with what you said. Point I am trying to make - trading 2027 pick I think greatly reduces the risk of that extreme scenario to happen, while Mavs will still have plenty of assets moving forward. They would still have all the young guys plus 2 picks to trade next summer. This is a move I am missing to be completely satisfied with the summer. Who knows, perhaps the trade I am missing would even remove the need for any significant trade next season, if the young guys show progress as we hope they will.

Your replying to me, but not sure what your referencing regarding "trade to satisfy Omahen"?

You say we don't need 3 first round picks for a trade next offseason.  That may be true.  But we are talking about our only tradable pick in the next 4 years.  Do we really want to spend it on a stop gap center that will make us a little better for a year or two?

Luka has 3 more years before his option year.  We have some time.  I feel like what they did this offseason has way more chance of long term success that will entice him to hang around then going the Cleveland route of spending every asset we have for short term success.

Yes, and neither ours nor any other FO gets it wrong. Let’s not be so quick to scoreboard when there is very little evidence of success. I think and hope they will do very well also. That doesn’t mean a thing though. What does mean a thing? Wins, the ultimate stat.

Sorry, it was Scottforthemavs.

That pick being the only tradeable one is true for this season only. There will be plenty of assets available next season. And yes, I think a good center would make this team much better. I don't agree Mavs have much time. Unhappy players demand trades on a very regular basis these days.

It is also inevitable that some of the guys who were positive in +- will have that stat negative when playing for the Mavs. It is not possible that all players have a positive +-.

I guess, sure. But only if there’s a deal worth making. I haven’t seen/heard definitively that they’ve found such a deal and turned it down. I know you’re intelligent, so surely you don’t think trading it just to show Luka “hey, we did something” is a good idea.

Have we seen any of the specifics around the Ayton or Capela rumored talks? I’m with you on not wanting Ayton, but the only thing we have to go on is the report that what we offered was underwhelming (to put it nicely). Everyone knows I would have included the 27 in order to save the Green or Hardy inclusion for the Capela deal.

But those assets are even more in the future.  I'm not arguing for hoarding, but these assets you are referring to are picks many years into the future.  They are a very limited resource.

I don't have the concern you do regarding Luka demanding a trade any time soon, and I am even more skeptical a stop gap center is going to make the difference one way or another.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Center position up for grabs| McMahon: Mavs are encouraged by Lively - ItsGoTime - 09-26-2023

A good starting center would make a huge difference on this team. If that’s Holmes or Lively, great! Odds are it isn’t. We know DP isn’t.

I love Capella, and I think he would help a lot. I don’t think it would be wise to give up any of those three assets in exchange for him, however, nor do I believe Capella would make ENOUGH of a difference, short term, to justify such a sacrifice. Maybe if all questions other than Lively were answered, but the way things are now, I’d much rather just see how the team gels. With so much turnover recently, what we think they need might not actually be what they need.

Besides, we don’t actually KNOW that they could get either of those guys. It’s possible the cost was far greater than even you’d be willing to pay.

Just seems like a silly reason to be down on the things the actually DID, because those were mostly impressive things.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Center position up for grabs| McMahon: Mavs are encouraged by Lively - myconsumerclub - 09-26-2023

Mavs know Powell sucks finally that is why they are going to end up developing a rookie to play for us in the regular season and they have admitted that they have to do this or else they will be blamed by everyone including Luka that they were not trying to win hard from day one with the player who is the best option at this time. Guys Powell is so bad he is on day one of this season still going to be a much worse option that even using our rookie version of Lively. That is the fact jack and he is going to prove it on the court day one.

As for OMax, he is not 6'6" he is a 6'8" PF/SF plus he is a bad ass athlete that can out perform in defensive duties and be a monster night mare for all teams we face as a PF or a SF. GW is a SF/PF so he can pair perfectly with OMax. That will end up being the starting rotation. Irving and Luka will have to defend their guys and we will see them do much better. The rookies will play well enough to guard their guys and Grant is going to try to help out on his guy and maybe help with Luka or Irving's guys. Green would be better guarding those kinds of threats so he will come in against teams with top threats at the 1/2. Grant will be the guy when we face bigger threats we need to worry about most on that opposing team.

So if Green is the 6th man you have a nice view of what the team starts to look like 1 through 6.

Luka
Irving
Lively
OMax
Grant
Green

From here we can consider the rest of the team as being 2nd fiddle or worse. THJ Hardy Seth and Exum bring their talents up behind these guys in the backcourt and as wings.

PF and center then is going to see us bring in a second team front court that is not containing Powell because Kleber and Holmes will clearly be who gets that back up job.

Powell is going to end up as a 3rd team option at center behind Lively, Kleber and Holmes.

THANK YOU JASON KIDD!!!!!

Our third team might end up being Powell DJJ THJ Seth and Morris. 2nd team is likely to include Holmes Kleber Green Hardy and Exum. Hardy will continue to play great and earn this promotion. Exum is clearly decent enough as a 3rd PG to be used when they rest Luka and Irving. Green and Grant will split the minutes at SF and if you think Kleber and Holmes are able to outplay Powell then they will obviously earn more time from Jason.

So I see no way that the 3rd team will be different that how I just guessed it will be officially.

If you ask me we are a very deep team when you look at our third team and see all 5 of these guys playing. Could we have done better than Morris at PF sure but he is a veteran and he can hit a 3 and when we need fouls he will go in and perform that dirty work. THJ is still going to play hard with less minutes he will exert to the maximum to show he is a better player than a third team player in hopes we can get him a job elsewhere at that TDL where he can play more minutes. Seth is a defensive liability but he is a deadly 3 point threat who can come in and instantly hit a 3 and change the game so he is a specialist that may get rotation minutes. DJJ he is a great athlete that can defend so he is the defensive specialist to Seth as the offensive specialist. Powell will still get some minutes but barring injuries he will not be getting a lot of starts and huge minutes.

Moving on to the season and we start to see other teams endure injuries at positions where our 3rd teamers could start and or fill in as important rotation pieces this is what I see happening. Trade talks start and we make a deal and maybe we get picks and a big or a good big that is even better than what we have behind Lively and maybe a 2nd rounder or no pick.

Things will play out like this and it will be as I have said so let it be written so let it be done. Lets go Mavs and set my people Free SET Lively and OMax FREE!!!!!!

T SHIRTS with both breaking chains can now be sold.

The play I’m looking for to confirm our front office has turned over a new leaf - perfect execution of pumping THJ’s value, selling high, while properly managing Hardy’s ascension.

Now Jaden has the start of the season excitement I am looking for. He sounds like he worked for it. I hope his work was very well done in all of the right directions. I remember Dirk talking about guys who claimed they worked hard but they were no where near Dirk’s level.
