If the season started tomorrow (given that McGee's name is written in pen), I'd predict:

Luka
THJ
DFS
Wood
McGee

THJ makes more money than Bullock, is on the "leadership council," provides far more in terms of presenting himself for shot opportunities, and would drastically improve the Mavs' situation by demonstrating that his rough (pre injury) go of it last season is behind him. That's true whether they keep him or trade him down the line, so I think they'll want to make him as comfortable and confident as possible.

And then THIS gets said, and I realize that I'm in crazy town.

No more predictions from me. The Mavs are working from a playbook to which I don't have access. Personally, I think removing Dinwiddie from that 6th man role would be a MAJOR misstep.

Sidebar: is this the first hint we've had the roster is pretty much complete for now?

Or it is the hint that RB and DFS won't be on the team in the fall.............

Wink

Bullock AND Finney-Smith?

MAYYYYYYYBEEEEE Bullock. I could get behind that, too, in the right deal.

They aren't going to trade franchise, state, national and world-wide treasure Dorian Finney-Smith.

I realize he's probably not going to say "keep watching - we're not done shaping the roster yet" or anything to that effect on a Summer League TV interview. I do realize that.

But, I'm sorry, the detailed information he's offering about his thinking here leads me to believe they're at least close to being done for the summer. For example, he mentions Dinwiddie and THJ by name, so I feel it's safe to assume neither of them is going anywhere.

He doesn't mention Powell or Bullock. I suppose there's still a chance they have something going with them, but I'm not hopeful.

Dan:     Brunson is likely to leave
Board:  You are nuts

Dan:     We will spend our MLE on a big
Board:  You are nuts

Dan:     Wood will play a good bit at the four (his best defensive position)
Board:  You are nuts

I’m probably more convinced now than I have been that there will be a S&T.  I’ll post this in another thread, but the Knick OTC version that keeps the Kemba TPE, keeps their BAE and allows for Brunson to have a declining contract from $28mm is probably already a done deal.  It is just a matter of whether it will get more complex than that or not.

Knicks can't sign Hartenstein to the reported contract if this is not a SnT and they don't operate as an over the cap team. The only question is, if Mavs will get something more than TE out of it. And by that I mean expanded deal. Doesn't look good they will.

Heatstroke is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. It can result in an altered mental state including slurred speech, delirium, and confusion on who belongs in the starting lineup. If you see your coach suffering from this condition, please remove his hoodie and contact emergency services.

I mention this in Mavs news since it's potentially pertinent to the S&T discussions.

Ok, I buy this. I think you're right on the money. When you and @"F Gump" are singing the same tune, it's a good bet that the logic is sound, and at this point, just the deals not being finalized points to the likelihood of this, too.

The question is: What do we think the benefit for the Mavs ends up being? Is it just the TPE, or will it be one of the dozen scenarios you laid out all Spring? Sorry, I love you, but you weren't selling "they'll turn Brunson into a TPE that will go unused." That's not what I got out of your bi-weekly "just in case they lose Brunson" posts. Apologies if I missed something. (full credit for seeing Brunson's escape as more than just a technical possibility, don't get me wrong)

And then the question is: Did what actually happened benefit the Mavs more than what could have happened?

Also, a question about this ^^^:

Do you believe the 4 is Wood's best defensive position as a result of watching him play, or is just some defensive on/off metric leading you to believe this? I vehemently disagree that this should be the direction the team goes (if that's what you're suggesting). Obviously, this should be an option, as lineup flexibility is a great thing. I simply don't like it as the main, default lineup approach, that's all.

I said the same thing at the beginning of last season about Porzingis and Powell (who, like you, I've spent a lot of time defending around here). Turned out that the team ended up agreeing with me about that, once it became clear that two bigs weren't working. I think two bigs CAN work, but it's tough, and I think the benefits of MAKING it work aren't nearly what they were 10 years ago. Just my opinion, but I think most people who watch what's going on in the league today would agree.

May have gotten too cocky.  The Gibson news may throw a kink in my confidence regarding a S&T.  I need to think through it some more.

As to the answer to your question, I just wrote something in the Brunson thread.

I saw it. Good stuff.

I don't have much faith that this will be anything other than a TPE that will ultimately expire, but I can't fault you for giving us possibilities to consider. Appreciated.
