Not to defend the cash spend, but aside from Jalen, have we really had the talent or opportunity to spend?  Maybe this is more damning of our roster building ineptitude than it is our owner's wallet?

Ya there's certainly a lot of context to that list.  Two years of tanking in there.  What I don't understand is how is that chart the way it is and we STILL somehow managed to get ourselves in cap hell.  Just weird decisions over the Luka era...

We are still untangling the KP bawl of yarn and will not be free of that move for another two seasons after this one.  I still think a better front office wouldn't have touched that KP trade.

They need to hold him out longer than he wants. Re-injury would be devastating.

Absolutely. They need him badly.

The Wizards are quite happy at this point. They are getting more value out of him then they ever got out of Dinwiddie and Bertans. He's having a very good year. Health is wealth.

Individually he has a good year so far, agree. But Washington is exactly where they were last year. He doesn't make a team better, imho.

You can say the same for SD and Bertans no?  Do they make the Mavs better?  Last years romp to the WCF, looks more like a aberration to me.

Mavs with KP didn't make WCF. Mavs without KP and with SD/Bertans did. Of course it is a small sample.

If Mavs would be able to retain Brunson, I think last year achievement would be totally within reach. Probably still not good enough to go all the way.

Fair enough. I know KP wasn't here for their run, but Brunson was.  Mavs really see now how important a cog he was, and it's showing in the standings. He's been on a tear in NY. I think he has a good chance to make the AS game.

In fact, their best stretch in quite some time was their hot start last year, built around Dinwiddie, before the entire team decided they hated him. Porzingis has not helped them at all.

I am not a huge fan of Dinwiddie's impact this season in his current role, but give me him over KP 10/10 times.

RE: MAVS NEWS: 7th O | 25th D | 17th Net | 5th in West | 3 gm losing streak - Mavs2021 - 01-19-2023

Doesn´t matter what KP does or does not contribute to winning on the court. The trade was sold as "splitting up one big bad contract into two more tradeable contracts/assets", not as some on-court improvement deal. That is just another case of Mavs revisionist history.

If KP indeed opts out this summer the Mavs once again made an embarrassingly bad decision, since they still sit on the Dinwiddie and Bertans contracts and paid a 2nd round pick for the privilege.

From this angle you have a point, as long as Bertans is still here after the deadline.

Still, part of the reason it was sold that way, imo, was because they couldn't really use the words "addition by subtraction" which, honestly, was at least 50% of the motivation. Had to be.

Pretty ironic if he opts out a year early, however. I'll give you that.

I was talking about the New York KP trade in what a better front office wouldn't have done, for the record.

I didn´t consider this opt out scenario either, but I only wanted to give him four years or the five year max with heavy incentives and team clauses.

From his POV it makes sense. His body is a mess, so if he opts out a year earlier, he gets to sign a new contract earlier. The Mavs basically lost this deal the moment, Cuban once again completely careless, offered him the full max extension with a player option.

There was literally no incentive for Porzingis to play hard in the first two years of his deal. What would have been the point? His body is breaking down. He´s not going to grind through pain and injury the first 24 months into a five year deal. Nope he´s waiting till the opt out season to push through. If the Wizards are dumb enough to give him that extension, he´ll go full Parsons on the Grizzlies. Let the pain flow through him freely and take another 120M to the bank.
