RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? - MarkAguirreWrathofGod - 12-16-2022 I agree with your sentiment about using the end of bench and two ways wisely. Lamar Stevens is a starter and defensive bulldog glue guy for Cleveland; he went undrafted in 2020. Just load up on athletic wings that want to work, teach them the game and give them great shooting coaches and lots of reps from 3. You only need to find one Dodo, Strus or Stevens(or earlier Raja Bell or Bruce Bowen) every 10 years or so. McKinley Wright IV can’t even get burn here when we desperately need another PG. Load up on long athletic types between 6’5- 6’10 and get rid of the Wrights, Kemba Walkers and Dorseys of the world, unless you really mean to give them a chance to show what they’ve got. Its not like he will develop into much more than he is. Wright is more of a mystery for me. But I agree both are sort of odd. I think both are proving they are two way worthy. I have no evidence to back this up, but I would like to think Dorsey was signed as insurance in case there was a Hardaway trade and Green and/or Hardy were not ready to fill in as a guy who could hit open shots. Wright is in his third year in the G-league. I thought he was signed because they were going to keep the 15th spot open and he could be your emergency break glass if needed point guard. Since then, they have signed two small point guards for the last open roster spot. Did he get the spot because he was available and willing to sign? It just seems like very little creativity. Is there any hope he can earn a roster spot next year? Or is he Two way worthy and is a box to be checked off and now we can move onto other stuff type of move? Maybe I am being too hard on them for some of this. I have looked at several Two way spots on other teams and several aren't very interesting. Although for a team who has not had draft assets, I was hoping for more creativity trying to uncover some diamonds in the rough. Although they appear not very interested in this part of roster development. RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? - cow - 12-16-2022 Good conversation but I'd take a slight step back. I've been thinking about Rick's doghouse and how critical I was of him and the MBT for it. Always acquiring players and then having them fall out of favor quickly. We always complained about Mark, Donnie and Cuban not being on the same page with player acquisitions. And from where I sit, it seems the Mark, Nico and Kidd era is actually worse. RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? - omahen - 12-17-2022 Of course they do. And they are all employed by Lakers. Washington can certainly get more than that for Beal. OG, Trent Jr., Boucher, Precious. Even role players like Birch or Porter Jr. (when healthy). That's why it was exciting for about 5 minutes when we thought Porzingis was getting traded to the Raptors. They had pieces, but of course we couldn't pull it off. This season he has the best on/off +6.9 of all the Hawks starters, despite having a down year shooting, because he works hard for the team. My thoughts on Lavine (and certainly Beal) is their will be some hesitancy from many teams due to 5 year huge deal deal he is under. A Dallas offer of Wood, Dinwiddie, Hardy and a 1st is at least as attractive as what LAL could put on the table IMO. Almost every time a trade goes down like this for a superstar it generally only teams he's made it clear he want to go to that are in the running. He wants to be in LA for sure. I think its likely he would welcome Dallas as well. Mia could be a factor. You can eliminate tanking teams, small markets or teams that are in win now mode and don't want to mess up chemistry. List gets pretty small. As with anything its super unlikely but imo he would close to ideal playing off Luka. At least offensively. RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? - HAguiar95 - 12-20-2022 How about a teardown? THJ, Bertans, DFS, McGee for Love, Levert, Osman, Lopez. Wood, Bullock for Collins. Luka/Dinwiddie Levert/Hardy Green/Osman Collins/Love Powell/Lopez Cavs could be open to it, receiving a starter and a 6th man to try and win the East while eating future salary. Am I crazy to think we'd be a better team? We'd have about 25M to spend if I'm not correct. RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? - DanSchwartzgan - 12-21-2022 Keith Smith at Spotrac has an occasional series called "Next Contract" where he talks through interesting cases. Often there is something about their situation that makes for a challenging situation either for their team or for the player. Profiles have included: Jaylen Brown (no way he signs an extension, so he'll hit the UFA market) Siakam (He has all sorts of options for big money as he's been All-NBA twice) Turner (Is eligible for a rare 'renegotiate and trade' deal since Indy has cap room) Other write-ups include Naz Reid and Jaylen Nowell, Jerami Grant and Kyle Kuzma The Turner thing is fascinating. Note that he's no longer with Duffy, but changed to CAA. Reading these, you start to understand why Siakam and Kuzma might be on the trade market as their teams might not value them the same way they value themselves. He also writes about my guy Poeltl. Smith thinks Poeltl will make more than he's eligible to extend for with SA (and certainly more than he can extend and trade for). So, he'll probably wait until the summer to do anything. His UFA status would reduce the value of a trade for SA. Below are Smith's comps and where he thinks Poeltl will land financially this summer: That leaves us to finding recent comps to work off of. We already said that the $14.5 million per year that Poeltl could make via the Dinwiddie Extension seems a bit low. So, let’s look at the next few players on the highest paid centers list.
Now, we have our comp list and their average salaries on their current deals. If we factor in a slight upward-ness in salary, because the cap is climbing, we can land at a what seems like a fair value for Poeltl of about $18 million AAV. One last thing to note, Mitchell Robinson’s contract is frontloaded and descends year over year. That could be a smart structure for the Spurs to take if they re-sign Poeltl. They won’t likely need the extra cap space in the next year or two, but could down the line. And having Poeltl on a lower number in the further out season will keep him a very tradable asset. A reasonable middle ground deal could look something like this for Poeltl:
SUMMARY It doesn’t really make sense for Jakob Poeltl to sign a Dinwiddie Extension right now. He’d likely be leaving money on the table. If the San Antonio Spurs could get him to ink that sort of extension, that would be a major win for them. Instead, it makes sense for both sides to let things play out. If the Spurs want to go full cap space, they can just let Poeltl leave this summer. If they see him as a part of the future, they can still beat any offer that any other team can offer him. And, they can do so while keeping Poeltl on a still-tradable contract too. Rim protectors that can rebound and aren’t a complete zero on offense, are very valuable players. Poeltl is set to be one of the better free agents available this summer, in addition to being one of the top available centers. That’s going to get Poeltl paid, whether by the Spurs or someone else. I've been thinking more about this and maybe that's ok if you take into consideration the fact that if Luka is leaving it's most likely in the last year of that deal via a trade that gets us a ton of firsts back. The one team I'd unload our firsts for currently is Toronto, they have so many pieces that could help right now. Please no on Lavine, I used to be so high on pairing him here with Luka but that dude looks selfish as hell right now and has never played defense in his life. What is his intended meaning? 2 Because of their bloated payroll, the ability of the Mavs to compete to sign a player like Poetl (at these numbers) is nil. Their upper range to sign someone - in the best-case scenario - would be the big MLE. Trade, then? With all the big men they already have, it's also hard to imagine they would opt to spend even more assets in a trade and burn yet another roster spot on the position. If they can't find a path to make valuable the players they already have, they are really in deep dodo. |
