RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | FA starts Aug 2, 5pm - Branduil - 08-09-2021 The Mavs really must have been expecting Dragic to not get optioned by Miami. If the plan had been for a trade it would have made more sense to keep JRich and use his salary to Toronto- that would have been way more appealing to them than Powell is. OTOH the trade exception makes more sense if the plan was to flip Moses and the exception to Miami for a re-signed Dragic. RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | FA starts Aug 2, 5pm - Kammrath - 08-09-2021 Update: RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | FA starts Aug 2, 5pm - KillerLeft - 08-09-2021 (08-09-2021, 10:06 PM)F Gump Wrote: DFS, Brunson, and WCS to a lesser extent will be interesting decisions, because of the value of those players on the team, vs the payroll implications of keeping them. Not an unreasonable possibility, but they wouldn't waive him, which means they'd be taking on similar salary (more or less) in return. So the payroll issues in keeping DFS and JB aren't likely to change. As an aside - given the current makeup of the roster, I'd love to see a trade with SAC for Holmes plus ______ - if I can make it look like anything I want, it's also bringing either Haliburton or Maxwell. Hopefully, we can finally win a playoff series so we dont have to find out. That's why his decision took so long. He was waiting for the deal to get finalized (as they argued about how much salary Mavs take back). Not like the Mavs front office was any better in the 00s. Difference is that Cuban was making up for it. Mavs still rank 3rd in all time luxury tax spendings. Just looking at the best teams it is still a pay to win league. Nets, Lakers, Bucks, Warriors, Clippers all paid luxury tax in the last couple of years or will pay luxury tax this season. In the last 10 years three teams won without paying luxury tax (SA 14, Warriors 15, Bucks 21). Two of them went over the luxury tax line in the following season (as of now the Bucks will be over the tax line). RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | FA starts Aug 2, 5pm - Kammrath - 08-09-2021 A few more tweaks: RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | FA starts Aug 2, 5pm - sterlingmallory - 08-09-2021 (08-09-2021, 11:02 PM)Kammrath Wrote: A few more tweaks: Looks like we're trying to set ourselves up with cap space for 2023, especially if we can rehab KP's value and eventually unload his contract. Hopefully the Mavs are starting to get it, even if we don't always see it like that. Attracting the stars to want you, and being able to get them on your roster, has always been about the talent you have (on good-to-great contracts), not cap space. Talent-talent-talent. When you are on top, everyone wants to come. Mavs had that in 2011 and pissed it all away. Getting it built back up is so much harder than Cuban imagined. Shortcuts are very hard, next to impossible, and they also wasted a decade without building it back up, waiting for a star before they started. Ugh. They can try next summer, cause even if they traded Porzingis for air, they´d still have no capspace. Yup this is our team for the next two years and that´s with DFS+ Brunson signing extensions and Porzingis staying healthy. Looking at that pay-roll, if Cuban has become cheap, because he´s bleeding money everywhere *cough* crypto currency *cough*, we won´t acquire Markkanen or Bagley, simply because they are too expensive. RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | FA starts Aug 2, 5pm - DanSchwartzgan - 08-10-2021 Still wondering two things about Sterling Brown... 1. Why isn't he done yet? 2. Why such an odd amount if he is coming for part of the BAE? Recall that Dallas was rumored to want Garuba who went to the Rockets at 23 (who was the reporter who said the war room went silent when Houston picked Garuba?). He's not official yet because he has to secure a buyout from Real Madrid. His salary slot is $2.35mm (can be increased by 20%). His out of pocket for the buyout is $2.78mm with his team able to kick in another $775k. Part of the negotiation reportedly is allowing him to pay installments. Houston is over the cap and probably has no use for DJ Augustin at $7mm. We could probably use an emergency PG on the roster to help with injuries/rest. Augustin and Sterling (S&T) would fit within our TPE with $831k to spare (still an odd amount). Garuba wouldn't count as incoming salary until he is signed. What is the going price for buying a first rounder in the 20's? Is eating $7mm in salary enough? Does Augustin have value as an expiring backup PG? If he does, it would mean we'd need to send out something more. From a roster standpoint, we would need to send more anyway as we are already at 15 (14 if you cut Moses) and you'd need to create slots for Augustin and Garuba (Sterling is already in the count). We wouldn't necessarily have to trade match all of this despite the fact both teams are over the cap. Dallas as the $10.8mm TPE and Houston has all sorts of smaller TPE's that could be used to send players back and forth (including a $5mm, and $8mm and a $1.78mm that Moses would fit into). I'm not going to pretend to know what Houston would want back for Augustin and the 23rd pick, but Garuba would be a really nice fit as a defender next to KP or Small-Ball center. Maybe... Moses/Green into a Houston TPE and Sterling/Augustin into a Dallas TPE with Garuba not counting as salary yet. In the end, the only part that matters here is Green for Garuba and getting a band-aid for a year at the backup PG slot.
