RE: ROSTER TALK: $10.87M TPE | THJ unlikely to return | NYK to pursue JB - Jakeospikez - 03-31-2022 Turner could be a great target as a defensive upgrade at 5 with the Doe Doe at 4 lineup. I just wonder about what type of expanded role he is looking for? If he just wants to be a featured rim runner taking over Powell's offensive role playing with a clean paint instead of a stretch 5, then that's perfect. If he wants to get more offense ran through him similar to how KP was bitching, then that's a problem. I think he can be a decent rim runner. He doesn't have many dunks, but that's likely due to playing with Sabonis in the front court every year. Dunk stats 54 dunks in 74 games in 2018-2019. If you look at some dunk compilations though, seems like he'd be fine to rim run if he were featured and willing. Most of these dunks are when Sabonis isn't on the floor. There are injury concerns with his foot the past 2 years to consider as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9GZAnTiHZ4 Also wonder why Carlisle would be willing to trade him in the offseason. Seems like the type of 5 he's looking for. The Pacers rumors from the post above says they may keep him to see how he works out with Haliburton at the start of next year, and then potentially be dealt at the deadline. RE: ROSTER TALK: $10.87M TPE | THJ unlikely to return | NYK to pursue JB - mvossman - 03-31-2022 (03-31-2022, 10:42 AM)ItsGoTime Wrote: Assuming Turner’s feet aren’t gonna turn him into KP 2.0, he is the most ideal fit as a C on our roster. There’s not a lot that I wouldn’t do to get him. I’d prefer to have him with Powell, but if he’s a part of the cost (RC might feel strongly about getting one of his creations there), there’s no doubt in my mind that is a large upgrade for the team. I would be totally on board with Turner, and would have no problem sending out our 22 first to get him. I'm not sure he is the perfect fit though as he is not a great rebounder. I think I might prefer Capela to Turner, but honestly any one of Gobert, Capela, Turner would make this team a contender. Carlisle may love Turner but it's not clear the feeling is mutual. And Turner is only under contract for one more year before he's a UFA. If Indy knows he won't stay, dealing him either in the summer or before the deadline makes the most sense. Yeah I get he's expiring next year, just why deal him in the offseason instead of at the deadline and getting that information on how his fit is with Haliburton. I guess it'd have to be for an immediate pick at the 2022 draft instead of waiting for a 2023 pick if they know 100% he won't even think for a second about resigning in Indiana. Right, like maybe the 22 pick and a player Rick loves (read THJ or Powell). RE: ROSTER TALK: $10.87M TPE | THJ unlikely to return | NYK to pursue JB - ItsGoTime - 03-31-2022 I know exactly what I'm about to get for this take, but I'm gonna say it anyway. If we lose JB in the offseason, I'd kick the tires on a Butler trade. If he comes cheap enough... Oof, just looked at his contract, NVM. Forgot he extended and thought he only had a year or 2 left which I think he would be fine in that amount of time. Our guys are gym rats and follow instruction well, so I don't think it would be anything like the Minny situation. Anyway, I think that contract, considering his age and wear and tear, is as bad as any in the NBA. I liked the thought of him coming in and teaching by example about physical basketball to some of these guys, but no way Jose on that contract! Imagine a 36 yo Jimmy Butler making $52M in his last year. RE: ROSTER TALK: $10.87M TPE | THJ unlikely to return | NYK to pursue JB - Jommybone - 03-31-2022 Jimmy for LeBron RE: ROSTER TALK: $10.87M TPE | THJ unlikely to return | NYK to pursue JB - Kammrath - 03-31-2022 RE: ROSTER TALK: $10.87M TPE | THJ unlikely to return | NYK to pursue JB - SleepingHero - 03-31-2022 Now that the tax line is slated to be 149 mil, the scenarios where the Mavs theoretically could stay under the tax line while giving JB his preferred 20 mil became a little bit more likely (though still improbable). THJ+Maxi for a guy like Myles turner has us shed around 11 mil in salaries. Need to lose anther 10-13 mil just from my napkin math to get under the tax line should Brunson get his 20 mil starting salary. Burke+Brown+Chriss+Frank+Boban all add up to 17 mil in salaries, though losing all of them will just give us an empty roster and a bunch of roster charges so they're really aren't much savings there. Maybe 1-2 mil at the most if we got rid of Burke+Brown+Chriss and replaced them all with 1-2 mil guys. Of course I don't care if we're in the tax for a single season. That's Cuban's problem not mine. Good teams pay for talent and that talent usually is expensive. That means the tax is an eventuality. Of course I'd rather the Mavs have some better players to justify a tax bill, but if the team performs what do I care? Curious and excited to see how the guys play in the playoffs this year. Lots of little things to watch to see how to navigate in the summer. Will Brunson continue playing well? A bad playoffs means he could come back cheaper than we think. Also worth noting the amount of cap-space teams will have is rising along with it A Brunson 4yr/80.6 million deal giving him his 20 per year would start at exactly $18 million next year. This would put us at $16 million over the apron. Bertans makes $16 million next year RE: ROSTER TALK: $10.87M TPE | THJ unlikely to return | NYK to pursue JB - Mikelorenzo - 04-01-2022 I'm afraid we have to pay Jalen...sending him in ST is a significant reduction in value and letting him walk for nothing...a disaster. If necessary you change him at the deadline... the teams that are not FA destinations, will value more a young guy locked up for several years. I imagine a scenario, where Turner is not traded, out of season to see his connection to Hali and Brogdon is traded instead. The deadline arrived, we find ourselves in a situation.. From Jalen locked up vs Turner to months of FA...then they are the ones to add... One guy that could be interesting to follow is TJ Warren...he's been out for 2 years and he's completely off the radar...he's already recovered and has the whole offseason to get in shape... 28 years old entering his best age... Wing with 6'8, elite scorer, believes for himself and top in steals... the last time we saw him play... Sign me up...I guess we'd have to work at an ST or make an offer to you FA, I don't think it's too expensive...but I'm not sure we can get there RE: ROSTER TALK: $10.87M TPE | THJ unlikely to return | NYK to pursue JB - F Gump - 04-01-2022 (04-01-2022, 10:09 AM)Mikelorenzo Wrote: I'm afraid we have to pay Jalen...sending him in ST is a significant reduction in value and letting him walk for nothing...a disaster. It's possible they sign no one new at all, but if they do it will be in the bargain basement only. Part of the problem will be roster space, because if they keep JB and their pick, that puts them OVER the limit, at 16. But the bigger issue will be money, not just because of the tax issue, but they will only have the taxpayer MLE (~$6.2M) and minimums. Players who will want to be paid the big MLE or more will be impossible. And while I hate drafting out of need, it seems obvious what this team needs and that's putting aside that the front office has big (pun intended) decisions to make with Powell and Maxi entering the final year of their deals. I think this really depends on what (who) is available. Another mobile big would be great. If there is a way to make that happen, then it is worth a late first (not for Holmes) to make it happen. The problem with the draft route is a big picked that late will likely take a few years, and as close as we are, we need impact sooner. I was an advocate for not just letting talent walk since he was the 2nd best player in the playoffs last year but that contract is certainly looking like a mistake and a ballast at the moment So to me packaging THJ, Maxi, and the pick for a starting level big seems like the best course if that's possible |
