RE: MAVS NEWS: 16th O, 5th D | 5th in West | 18-6 in last 24 games - cow - 02-16-2022 Having Frank and Josh take about ten million jumpers this summer should be the only plan. RE: MAVS NEWS: 16th O, 5th D | 5th in West | 18-6 in last 24 games - Winter - 02-16-2022 (02-16-2022, 05:17 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: In the Dragic case, the Mavs chose Dindwiddie over him it seems I can't believe this is the case. It appears to me that the trade is largely what Nico said it was - it brought them more flexibility and a playmaker at the appropriate position. This wasn't a deal where you choose Dinwiddie over Dragic. This was deal where you get to trade KP, get an acceptable playmaker and known commodity, and solve a contract issue. Your second option was to keep KP and try to wait and buy out Dragic in a competitive market. It sounds like the first option is a smarter choice. I suspect that's true too. I think Burke has an identifiable offensive skill that's really needed at very specific times. He can create a shot and he's confident about shooting it. He might actually be useful in some games. I don't think Frankie excels at anything or brings anything special to the game. I don't believe the KP trade primarily was because the Mavs wanted Dinwiddie. Like you said I think it was Nico largely talked about numerous times of flexibility. But in doing that trade the Mavs also accepted that Dragic is no longer an option, and that Dinwiddie fulfills that role. And THAT to me is up for debate. But it's also a cost of getting off the KP trade. The Dragic is "no longer an option" thing feels like a money or cap issue more than anything else. I just don't think we fully understand it. I don't believe it's some decision by Dragic to play elsewhere. I would probably be willing to cut someone to get him, but it may not be that simple. It could come down to is a 4 month rental of Dragic more valuable than Tre Burke's 3 million dollar expiring deal in 2022. Maybe they know Dragic will be a Mav next year anyway or at least make the attempt to bring him on board finally. I think it's about 90% a 'minutes' thing. The minutes being allocated, and to whom and how many, is a much bigger part of the roster-building equation than fans realize. They had a big need (and lots of minutes) for another PG/creator type before the trade, but now they don't. I still say the major component is that if you pickup Dragic, you need to be willing to cut two players. We are an injury to Maxi/Powell away from needing another 4/5 hybrid. Where was Finley in all of this? Why was it Bob who was taking over the draft and not him? He was supposed to be the draft guy right? Odd that he allowed Bob to take over when Donnie left. Was it AFTER that draft that we heard of Fin getting assigned the draft? Am I remembering that right? I remember a story about how he was in charge of that, yeah. But, the story I'm remembering was more about how he was coordinating the setup of draft night HQ, making sure everyone had a space to work, everyone was networked in, etc. I remember something about how he couldn't believe how smalltime the Mavs' approach was with all of that when he arrived, and how he was put in charge of making it a bigger production with more minds involved. I came away thinking he was like a draft night concierge of some sort, not a pick maker. Could be wrong though. I don't think they've spoken much on Finley's exact role except for the nuggets released when Harrison was hired. I'm sure I've missed a few things though, so it's possible I'm behind the curve on this. Yep. He basically went to his first draft only to see that there was no draft board and the scouts were all advocating on-the-spot for their own favorites. After that, Finley started working with the scouts ahead of time to prioritize players. I don't think he was ever officially in charge of the draft, but as VP of basketball operations he insisted that they actually get organized. https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/mavericks/2016/06/27/michael-finley-explains-how-the-mavericks-ditched-their-sketchy-draft-room-discussions-of-years-past/ In the process, though, he definitely unearthed clear evidence that Donnie never really took the draft seriously. |
