Broader questions! - Mavs2021 - 06-09-2021 Feels like we have exhausted all the roster/trade options already, so let me ask some questions from a different angle. Part 1: 1.) Will Luka Doncic apply pressure on the Mavs to get him help (like a legit 2nd star) before signing the super-max extension? 2.) Would Doncic/Duffy go as far as handing the MBT a list with players and tell them to make one happen? Did it impact Curry for Duffy client Richardson on a smaller scale? 3.) Do you think players/agents generally should get involved in recruitment/roster building decisions? 4.) Do you think Duffy/Doncic could be more successful than Donnie/Cuban over the last decade? 5.) What would Cuban do, if Doncic/Duffy demanded that Carlisle or/and Nelson are fired? Part 2: 1.) What do you think are the main reasons the Mavs cannot recruit any top free agents (destination, owner, general reputation around league, strategy/methods, coaching)? 2.) Who do you think is mainly responsible for the Mavs lack of free agent recruitment success (Star Player, Cuban, Carlisle, Donnie)? 3.) Which positional change would benefit the Mavs future the most (Cuban, Carlisle, Donnie)? 4.) What do you think is the perception of Donnie Nelson, Mark Cuban and Rick Carlisle among their respective peers? Fish or Shark? 5.) Do you think the ultimate hunger to win is still there for Mark Cuban, Donnie Nelson and Rick Carlisle? 6.) Do you think the MBT will actually apply a strategy change this off-season? No No No Makes no sense, different jobs Moot for the foreseeable future ------------ Cuban Cuban Cuban Cuban - guppy, Carlisle - shark, Nelson - highly respected Cuban -no, Others - yes No RE: Broader questions! - Jommybone - 06-09-2021 These are interesting questions, all centered on the same theme: the confluence of star power and team management. My take is that Cuban’s relational style of management will not allow Luka to become disgruntled. In other words, Luka will never have to demand things because he’ll feel included, to the extent he wishes to be, in the decision process. I also think Cuban is too smart to let a player run the team. It isn’t working for either LA team. It won’t work here. It’s dumb. So if it ever comes to that, Luka will be traded. But that would be a colossal fail, so they’ll be working every day to maintain a Dirk-like relationship with the kid. I do think we’ll end up with another Duffy client each year from now until who knows when. Frank Kaminsky and Zach LaVine seem like real possibilities this offseason. Do you think you have an idea of how much Cuban influences the actual moves that the Mavs make these days? How much does he impact who is picked, traded for or signed? Not directly. 2. I hope not. The agents are biased and teams need to act on their own accord. 3. Sometimes. Sometimes relationships can get you an edge. But this is double-edged sword. 4. No. Donnie knows what he is doing and Cuban has experience. 5. He would fire Carlisle and/or Nelson. Part 2 1. Ill-conceived luck. In respect to FA’s; they put their luck into the hands of others. Timing of free agents and lack of cap space in the early days, Dirk’s age in plan powder days, Doncic was a rookie in 2020, Cuban was apathetic and financially volatile throughout plan powder. 2. Cuban and Mavericks team reputation/perception used to be a laugher. 90’s Mavs were known for being bad. Cuban is known as a goofy tech billionaire. Dirk wasn’t a sexy superstar. 3. Cuban, when we won the championship he finally learned to keep his mouth shut. But passing on Giannis to go after Dwight I put on Cuban. 4. All respected among nba peers 5. I don’t know, But it’s there w Luka. 6. No and yes. No on the long-term strategy, possibly yes in respect to Porzingis. Apparently not. But he still has faith. 2. I wonder if it would be better if they did. 3. It is what it is. 4. Of course. Luka is on a shortlist of generational talents. That’s what matters. 5. Hire a new GM or coach. 1. Dallas (the metro area) may still have an (possibly no longer deserved) image problem among black athletes (and black professionals for that matter). 2. We’ll find out soon. 3. It depends. Will the Bank of Cuban reopen now that they have a generational talent to build around? Can Cuban make enough money in his other ventures to go into the red for a few years on the basketball side? 4. I think probably they’re all taken seriously to a degree. Not the top tier but considered a solid organization for the most part. 5. Luka has reenergized the organization for sure. 6. Yes. This raises to me a a broad question from the broader questions. I call it the Super Pickup Team era which is different from the prior Super Team eras where franchise owners representing geographical locations competed on ground that was at least relatively more equal. In today's NBA where the top players are putting together their own teams how do franchises remain competitive when they are not among the select few "destination cities" chosen by the most elite super stars? Free agency is not a level playing field. Which cities are the top destinations based on geography? The LA teams, NY teams, Miami? Orl seems they could be one if they could get in the Star game? That leaves what 24 or 25 teams that are essentially 2nd tier or lower in the game within the game of getting enough talent to compete for a championship. Obviously one way is still the draft which is the only way Dallas gets a Luka Doncic. Now having a Luka Dallas has to compete to get the best possible star talent next to Luka. For a team now competitive enough to miss the lottery for long time where is the 2nd and 3rd tier star talent coming from? This is why Porzingis was the right move on paper because Dallas is not a very likely contender for the Kawhi's, George's and Lebron's of the NBA and even the Greek Freak types were always a long shot. KP had at least flashed the potential to be at least an all star if not an outright super star. This is also why at 25 years old Cuban, Donnie and company are wise to play the Unicorn card to the maximum. He's still the closest they are to 2nd superstar at least in demonstrated potential. Understanding the new 1st 2nd and 3rd tier nature of the Super Pickup Team era impacts Cubans team building strategy, or certainly should.
