I'd like Holmes but KP, WCS, Boban, Maxi, Powell, Brown and you'd have to guess they have some hope for Onu. I'd take Holmes over any of them but I'm not sure why you pickup the WCS option if Holmes was in the cards. If they're not keeping him, they can trade him for another asset. The smart way of doing things as opposed to dumping good players and not drafting future MVPs because you lose the "powder" to sign free agents (who will never sign here anyway). WCS is neither a valuable contract or a good player. If they though Holmes + another was in the cards, they could have used that 4M to negotiate with that would-be tandem. Love your cap stuff but I think you underestimate free agent paydays every year. We'll be out on Fournier, Holmes, and Reggie Jackson at those numbers. I would guess: Fournier - 4/80 Holmes - 4/70 Jackson - 4/60 And the Mavs shouldn't be out on any of them at those prices. They're certainly better signings than Barnes at what we paid for him. We need better players, and beggars can't be choosers. (08-01-2021, 11:29 PM)cow Wrote: WCS is neither a valuable contract or a good player. Knee-slap. I'm confident he can easily be traded if it's actually necessary. We're not talking about $12 million a year for a backup C who can't even rebound or block shots here. I said he isn't a value or a good player and we should have used the 4M we are paying him this year elsewhere. I don't know what Holmes number will be, but like him at one number and not at the much bigger ones. However, what team will have a way and desire to pay him the numbers in the upper teens? I don't know what Fournier's number will be, but Hollinger gave his projection, and I'm definitely interested if he's right. That's all I said. If he's not, then his attractiveness changes, and whether he is preferred becomes a comparative exercise to options like "So what does THJ cost? Or Powell?" and "What might Dragic cost after a buyout?" and "Derozan's price, might it be too attractive to pass up?" and etc. I don't know what Batum's number will be, but the places he's linked with appear to only have taxpayer MLE money. Or less. I'd certainly offer more than that. I don't know what Jackson's number will be, but if LAC pays him all they can pay, I agree that's a dead end ...but given the rest of their payroll and roster, it's fair to wonder if they are willing. Ideally the Mavs should have a trade lineup and secured with DP and/or WCS involved, but the Mavs can worry about that later. Maybe after a few days, some team would need a big, or maybe some team would be desperate for a PG and would offer something of good value for Brunson and at the same time take DP/WCS as a consequence. Now if they can't trade DP and/or WCS and the season starts: 7 bigs is definitely top heavy, but when you look at em', 4 of them do not require heavy and consistent minutes. KP will have his load management / smaller injury issues and Maxi and DP will be somewhat constants. Not expecting the Mavs to carry 7 bigs beyond the TDL. I guess my thinking would be, why sign WCS if the plan was for another big? Couldn't that money have gone towards Holmes if that was the plan? WCS in free agency would most likely be sitting out there a while (it's how we got him in the first place). Even if you missed on Holmes and WCS got picked up elsewhere, there are big men like Dwight Howard and Noel out there. It just doesn't ad up. I don't think we'll move Dwight as it will be too expensive. But like I said Powell's horrible contract is clearly the bigger problem. Who said anything about the contract being untradeable? Burke isn't unreadable either but it doesn't mean his meager contract is a value. The only good thing about the WCS contract is that it only lasts a year. Dwight Powell's terrible contract is irrelevant. It will be beyond easy to trade him if necessary and if not he's a perfectly usable backup C, in fact he played better D than KP did. I dunno what to tell you other than if we were following your free agent strategy, we'd never sign anyone good. We argued about this ad naseum two summers ago. The entire nature of free agency (with multiple teams bidding) is that most known commodities get paid more than they're worth. If I'm going to use Hollingers numbers for anything, I'm looking at players his model predicts are worth X amount and scuttlebutt is they'll get less in free agency. Here are some values he has based on his model. Devonte Graham - $19 million TJ McConnell - $12 million Alex Caruso - $12 million Danny Green - $19 million Alec Burks - $10 million Furkan Korkmaz - $11 million Nicolas Batum - $10.5 million Doug McDermott - $8 million Richaun Holmes - $18 million (put it in there for you. I think $16-18 is his number) Kelly Olynyk - $14 million RE: 2021 FREE AGENCY: MIA favs to SnT for Lowry - mvossman - 08-02-2021 (08-01-2021, 11:59 PM)cow Wrote: Who said anything about the contract being untradeable? I would not be surprised if Nico already found a buyer if opportunity presents itself. I just think he would have still been on the table without picking up the team option later in free agency if you still wanted him. And if they missed out him, I doubt anyone would lose sleep over it. But who knows, maybe the MBT have bigger plans for him in a trade or maybe they just like him on the team.
