They are not fun to watch, that’s for sure.

We are doomed. Kidd is going nowhere simply because he has Luka and Kyrie's respect...especially Kyrie. And Kidd's system on offense is to let them do whatever they want so of course they will always put up nice box scores, win or lose so it's not like Kidd's coaching (or lack of) is going to hurt their stats.

And I honestly don't think Kyrie cares too much about winning anymore and I don't mean that in a completely criticizing way but it's probably true. He is just happy to be in a stress-free environment playing for a coach he likes and away from the east coast media.

I don’t know. The pressure will ramp up on Luka as the lowest performing superstar in history. His desperation to not go down in history as a high scoring loser will lead him to accept a good coach or to just leave the team.

Do you think he’ll go to Utah?

My unwanted opinion of the Mavs issues:

1) Going after the wrong players. Too much is put into fit/value contracts leaving the Mavs to use players with flaws. Luka clock is ticking faster these days. Mavs need one or two more 20M+ type players. Drain the swamp of Dwight, Maxi, THJ and Green(if Green craps bed rest of year or in playoffs). Get bball players in here...not specialists.

2) Too much experimenting with lineups before ASB. Go get wins. Every other team seems to use their good players/lineups way more often than we use ours before ASB.

3) Coaching. Bad defense and too many bad shots on offense are allowed. We just give away possessions because of bad shots. Why? Bargain bin shopping, imo.

4) Luka. Such a paradox. Seems to be rocket science to build a team around this guy. Dont know if its him or the FO. Hopefully Adelson's figure it out.

There is still room for a bait and switch...so I am not completely down on the Mavs just yet.

I don't think there's any hope for this team without a coaching change. Honestly, I think the rest is pointless until that happens. They'll probably get hot when the schedule gets easier, but that's fool's gold. They clearly are not a good or even average defensive team. They need a new voice. Luka needs a new voice too. Cuban needs to disappear.

Cuban on the court against Philly I think it was talking to the refs during the replay review or whatever was going on was so cringe. Aren’t there rules against that sort of thing?

I haven’t been on the board since the summer but had to come back to see what people were saying about the coaching.

The Pacers game really highlighted the lack of coaching this team has. The Pacers b-squad looked more polished than our starters. The ball movement, the moving without the ball, the hustle, the aggression… it was honestly embarrassing.

I was always a Rick apologist, so maybe I’m biased, but he always was able to get more out of the talent he was given. Kidd on the other hand… He seems to be very hands off, creating an environment that star players like, but does little to intercede as he just “watches the game” and waits for the players to “grow up”. I think his approach may be ok for an assistant coach, a role he thrived in with the Lakers. A head coach needs to take more accountability for his team’s success and do everything they can to prepare the team to compete.

Edit: thank you for letting me vent

I've been a Mavs fan since the early 90s. I'm not sure i've missed a game in my adult years (i'm 42 for context). But i've intentionally not watched the last 3 games. I'm sick of this team.

I look at the box score the next day and then come here to see everyone's analysis. But i'm done caring. This team has given up.

This coaching staff is crap. Cuban is crap. They tried at the deadline, and i loved their moves. But it just didnt work. We are wasting a generational talent and that hurts.

They've changed a lot in 16 days, haven't they? I'm happy to eat crow. This team is going to have a deep run, barring any injuries to rotation players.

Kind of crazy how the vibe has changed in two weeks.  Its a long season and there can be so many huge swings in perspective.  I remember two seasons ago had similar swings.  A lot of Kidd sucks swings, A lot of KP angst, and then angst over the trade.

A lot of folks are talking about 4 seed right now but I kind of hope we end up at 6.  The only team I really don't want to face is Denver and another WCF run would be a great rebound for this team.

RE: I'm out on the 2023-24 season .... - youzigizag - 03-27-2024

Basketball needs to lower the amount of games.

If teams can tinker for 2/3rds of a season while coasting and only need to kick it in gear for 2 weeks of the season to win a few games...they need to lower the amount of games per year or figure out something new.

I’ve been in and out and in and out. Guess I’m a fan!

Like the sentiment but draft the best seed available.

I've been in for the team. Out for the coach. And that hasn't changed--for me.

But I like the team better when they win--and win with class.

If we're gonna dog the coach when the team looks absolutely hopeless and riot for a change, then we should give the coach props for making them look the most polished they've been in 365 days.

This year has taught me a lot about Jason Kidd. The dude is absolutely fine with failure/losing. In fact I think he advocates for it during the regular season, as he thinks it builds his team up. He's partly right. A team built through adversity is a strong one. On the other hand he is a dolt because it's the riskiest game to play and truthfully why should a coach be ok with losing? If there is a lesson that his players can teach himself, I think Kidd will let the team fail to learn it (*if they even do).

If a game is going poorly because his guys aren't motivated, there is a 0.1% chance that Kidd will save them. As he said, he's just watching like us. But!!!!!! If Kidd believes in a team AND if they have bought into his system, then he really does know how to win a game. I think that's why Kidd has always had pretty above average playoff success as a HC.

But again those 2 events that appear to be rare as hell, because out of the 5 editions of Mav teams Kidd has coach (KP Mavs, WCF team, Wood Hell, Post Kyrie trade, Current team), only 2 versions have worked. It's hard to get rid of him because of how ingratiated he is with Luka and Kyrie, but thankfully this version of the Mavs are all under contract for a while. So maybe keeping Kidd isn't terrible.

(But maybe we'd be even better under a real coach like Budenholzer....?)

I think you're on target with everything.

I think that Kidd's downfall in the playoffs with this Perfect Lakeresque Kidd Team that Nico has assembled is that he's going to continue to play the rotation in the playoffs as if it were the regular season, Gafford/Lively will get played off the floor (less because of defense than because of being zero outside scoring threat), and he won't be able to adjust - he'll either continue to play them and the other team will feast, or struggle with the personnel because he can't play two of his six best players. I think this could lead to a much quicker out than we will expect coming off how the regular season ends. We could go 10-0 over the next ten games and still lose quixotically in the first round due to these problems. Unless he miraculously adjusts. Or Lively and/or Gafford are so good that they're able to adjust without his hands-off guidance.
