RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 09-28-2020 Horford would be more useful to them than Hayward but he can get a better deal than that I suspect. The deal would start as Hayward for Horford and Richardson and end with Ainge getting two unprotected firsts and the Philly GM's firstborn when all was said and done. Yep, that was me... What would a successful Mavericks offseason look like for you? For the only open-ended question, I’ll just summarize what I saw while looking through the answers. At least half, if not two-thirds of you focused on the acquisition of a new veteran wing. Most suggested that he be a 3-and-D player; those who didn’t often mentioned defense explicitly or an “enforcer” to protect Luka Doncic. Some suggested using the team’s two draft picks on additional wing players. (Saddiq Bey’s name was mentioned.) Some were comfortable with “low-end depth” to continue saving money for 2021. The very first respondent simply said, “Giannis,” which was an answer I enjoyed. Someone else said, “Get Rudy Gobert,” which doesn’t seem possible nor necessary. While many comments also mentioned an additional ballhandler, I only saw a few asking only for that. The comments were usually something like, “Draft wing prospect, sign secondary playmaker,” or simply, “3-and-D wing, secondary ball handler.” Everyone understands this team’s needs, even if the prior question shows one is given more priority than the other. (Rightly so.) To the person who said, “Tim Cato gets 30k followers and dirk,” does that mean Dirk follows me? Or I get my own personal Dirk? Unsure. Likewise, I think there are human ethics concerns about cloning Michael Finley, as someone else suggested, but I like the creative thinking. The poetic nature of whoever wrote, “The Beal tolls,” deserves to be appreciated here. “Sign Boban to lifetime contract,” was the most correct comment received. And whoever mentioned, “Get a few hammers,” clearly is just a huge Home Depot fan. I liked the comment that simply said, “No headlines, recuperate.” This team should acquire another player or two, but it would be better and dangerous even with the exact same roster next year. A quiet offseason wouldn’t ruin this team’s long-term plans, which are more secure than ever. His PER is GREAT. He will be 27 years old. He is not a great defender IMO by any stretch, but he is team defense solid. Theoretically he is a good fit IF RC is willing to play someone big minutes WHO CANNOT SHOOT THE THREE. However, he was TERRIBLE in the playoffs, so that freaks me out big time. Yes this year was abnormal and so were his circumstances, but he looked bad and washed up. Finally, he is a douchebag. And for that reason alone basically: RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - Scott41theMavs - 09-28-2020 (09-28-2020, 01:12 PM)Kammrath Wrote: Theoretically he is a good fit IF RC is willing to play someone big minutes WHO CANNOT SHOOT THE THREE. Oladipo is the perfect 1 year trial run. Dude is theoretically the perfect off guard to play next Luka. He is great as the ball handler in the PnR and his defense is tenacious. His serious injury is something for concern. I don't know how many athletic guards ever look the same coming back from a patellar tear. Thats why the 1 year trial is so helpful. Dipo will be motivated to show out to get a big contract. Odds are he'll leave, and the Mavs can still have their space for 2021. Since him leaving can be a deterrent for many teams, I wonder how strong a package of Jackson+Wright+THJ+18+31 is. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - KillerLeft - 09-28-2020 I'd love Oladipo if I knew I was getting pre-injury Oladipo. Thing is, he wasn't all that good this year. Maybe this was because of the injury, and maybe it was because he was off-ball more, but either way, not a great risk, imo. And, I didn't think he was much of a defender this year, tbqh. Small sample size, for sure. I guess I'd be into it if the price was right. I don't think Indy has any use of our role players like Curry and Kleber, as they have bench full of them. Nevertheless, I would also consider Curry+Kleber+picks. I wouldn't throw in our 2 most valuable role players for 1 year of Oladipo. Especially since we don't know how Dipo will actually be over an 82 game season. When I made my proposal, I assumed the offers for Oladipo would be relatively light. This is mostly because he suffered a potential career altering injury, where after his return he sitll doesn't look 100%. AND taking into account that he can leave at a moment's notice next free agency. Those kind of factors can scare away a lot of teams. (These factors are also quite close that surrounded the KP trade). THJ fits Oladipo's role quite seamlessly. He's a solid scorer and can be a 2nd-3rd option for Indy. Wright and Jackson also aren't as much dead weight as we make them out to be (ok Jackson might be). But Indy could use another guard to play off off Brogdon, especially one that can come off the bench and provide good minutes. Jackson is more or less a flier. They also get 2 picks which is more than what most teams would give up for Dipo imo. Finally the contract situation also helps the Pacers. Wright is locked up to a reasonable deal. THJ and Jackson would be expiring. Indy could free up plenty of space. Didn't mean to rant but my overarching theme is that I think Indy could have use with Wright and THJ. And considering the risks with Dipo, those are some solid return pieces. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - Tyler - 09-28-2020 I'd love to have Turner. And a chance to give our medical team a year with Oladipo would be nice. Strategically speaking, I like the idea of Oladipo/Turner for Kleber/Curry/Wright as the basic structure of a deal. Add picks or other sweeteners if you want. Money-wise, that knocks $13.5mm off of Indy's cap next year. And (if you let Oladipo walk) about $8mm off of the Mavs cap in '21. Win-win. On the floor, that gives Indy three good and reasonably-priced assets which is not a bad return for two more expensive guys who apparently are on their way out. And Dallas gets a clear frontcourt upgrade (love Maxi, but I just think Turner is better) with a full season to see what Oladipo can do before gearing up for the big '21 free agency. Love the player, but I don't agree with that at all. I do. Personally I think he's at least as good of a fit on the court as either Kleber or Powell with KP. The spacing, rebounding, and defense between KP and Turner would be excellent. And Carlisle has raved enough about Turner whenever they play Indy that I'm confident he'd find a way to maximize his skills. But reasonable people can disagree. What don't you like about it? And Carlisle has raved enough about Turner whenever they play Indy that I'm confident he'd find a way to maximize his skills. My question on that would be, is Turner a good perimeter/switching defender? KP is great at patrolling the paint and protecting the rim, not so much at handling the guard switches. I remember a game in the bubble where the opposing team ran up the score (and eventually won the game, iirc) by attacking KP at the PnR switch. Let's imagine that Indiana would do Tyler's Curry/Kleber/Wright/18/31 trade for Turner/Oladipo. And then that Ainge would accept a KP/Powell for Thies/Brown/Smart/14/26 deal. Draft the Beys if they're available at those points, and then you have Luka/Smart/Brunson Oladipo/Smart Brown/DFS S. Bey/T. Bey Turner/Thies/WCS Looks juicy to me. Edit: I forgot all about THJ. He could possibly be included as the salary ballast for a trade for Giannis at the deadline. Re-sign Giannis and Oladipo if he's worth it, and roll. |
