RE: MAVS NEWS: Gm1 @PHX Dec 23, 9:30 pm | Gm2 @LAL Dec 25, 7pm - Kammrath - 12-07-2020 (12-06-2020, 10:41 PM)KillerLeft Wrote: @Kammrath Judging by Carlisle's comments today on Bey, he sees him as a natural 4, but it seems that like YOU, coach thinks his path onto the floor is as a 3&D 3/4 combo...I will admit defeat on this one, but I don't think this bodes well for the idea that Bey will make much of a contribution anytime soon. I just listened to all his comments and didn't come away with RC seeing Bey as a "natural 4" (whatever that might actually mean anyway). *shrug* Either way, I was really excited with how positive RC's comments were on him. It almost feels like coach has seen enough already to give him a lot of hope in him. I was also really excited by Bey's own comments that basically what he needs to do to get on the court is work on his shooting and being "dialed in" and not letting his attention lapse. I am personally hopeful that Bey might see some decent bursts of floor time by the end of the season and not just an endless string of DNPs. In my personal evals I actually think he is more ready to contribute than Green if his shooting has in fact improved like RC intimated. I really think Bey is an ELITE ELITE defender if he can stay focused on the details. It’s just that every single minute of video you showed us was of him playing the 4, and you and I even agreed the other day (I thought) that this was his natural position. Maybe natural is not the right word, but it’s definitely the position he played in college. I thought that entire chunk of Carlisle talking about him was basically “well, he’s got to play more than one position to get on the floor, and the 3 is actually quite different than the 4.” That’s not even much of a paraphrase - he actually said that stuff. I basically took it as coach speak signaling they want him to learn how to be a combo forward… Just like you do...even though it’s a new skillset for him. I was basically saying that you had it right. Why you chose to react like you did in the first paragraph, I guess I just don’t know. Sorry if it came off in some kind of argumentative way. It IS a completely different skillset, even in “positionless basketball.” I thought I was pretty careful to word my post as an obvious admission that they’re going to try to do with him what I didn’t expect them to try. Maybe natural is not the right word, but it’s definitely the position he played in college. I wasn't reacting in a contentious way. I just didn't understand your statement. Now I do. I would say Bey played the 4 all throughout college no question. But I do not think it is his "natural" position. And I don't think that is what RC is saying either. By "natural" I think of having intuitive instincts for something that are deeply ingrained. I think Bey is just used to being a "big" in the last two years, but I see a ton of on court instincts that tell me that I think wing will be much more "natural" for him once he absorbs the position. It could take years for Bey to develop, you may be totally right. I just personally think it will be quicker and I was encouraged by what I heard from RC and from Bey himself. We'll see I may be dead wrong on him. My dude, I am literally saying the exact opposite of this. But seriously, go listen again. Carlisle is literally saying (paraphrase incoming) that Bey has to learn a new position to get on the floor, and that it's "actually quite different" than the one he already knows how to play. I agree that he ALSO said many complimentary and encouraging things about him. I regret using the word "natural" as it took this conversation away from my point, somehow, which was "you were right." RE: MAVS NEWS: Gm1 @PHX Dec 23, 9:30 pm | Gm2 @LAL Dec 25, 7pm - KillerLeft - 12-07-2020 So much good stuff in that second Carlisle interview - not only about Bey, but in general. He was definitely in "genuine, candid" mode for that one. In addition to publicly doubling down on the need to improve defensively and mentioning that they're spending a higher percentage of practice time on it, he mentioned that they've "made a couple of changes" to their defensive philosophy. I find that comment to be very, very intriguing. Another player mentioned recently (Johnson, maybe?) that they were trying to be "really aggressive" defending pick and rolls. I wonder if Carlisle was specifically alluding to pick and roll defense with that philosophy comment...maybe they're trying to do away with that deep drop coverage? Man, I hope so. Either way, can't wait to see what those comments were about. Quote:Tyler Bey, really a great get for Dallas. He’s a role guy, great knack for the basket, knack for the ball. A great defender and rebounder, great size. His shooting has improved tremendously and will continue to. I actually spoke to one of the developmental coaches down in Dallas and he mentioned that Tyler was shooting the ball well. I swear this trainer is higher on Bey than Green, just like I am.
