RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Mavs03 - 06-26-2021 On the very small chance that Kawhi leaves the Clippers, would Dallas be the #1 option? If J-Rich opts out, we would have $34.4 million in cap space. I believe we're a Trey Burke for air trade away from getting to the max which shouldn't be hard. Would we still have the full MLE or just rMLE if we sign Kawhi outright into our cap space? RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Mavs2021 - 06-26-2021 I really hope the Brunson rumours are true. Our 2021 or 2023 pick back would be nice. Would we still have the full MLE or just rMLE if we sign Kawhi outright into our cap space? rMLE if they use cap space. But, I can't even wrap my head around this. It's tempting to hope for this outcome, because I believe Kawhi Leonard would make this team a contender overnight. He's not quite the defender he used to be, but then again, he's the main ball-handler these days. Maybe playing with Luka would allow him to put more energy in on defense again. To answer your question, I suppose we'd have to know whether or not Kawhi WANTS the ball in his hands as much as it has been since he got to LAC. If yes, then he won't want to come here, no. But, maybe he WANTS to play with a PG. Who knows... Everything I've learned about him, though, has led me to believe getting to Los Angeles (regardless of which team) has always been his goal. It's home for him. It's just so hard for me to disregard that because of a few rumors. This isn't a lecture to you Mavs03, I realize you said "very small chance." It's more to remind myself not to get my hopes up. (06-26-2021, 09:11 PM)Kammrath Wrote: That or Mitchell Robinson....if he is healthy, he is a great big to team with Luka. I think Robinson is a couple years away from being able to do what the Mavs need, but I have little doubt that he'll get there. I would be in support of that, for sure. I think going down the Lowry route is a bad decision. I really like his fit here but he is a little older. More importantly, I think Miami and Philly have been laying the groundwork there for awhile. I expect he winds up in one of those two in a sign and trade. Its an easy call for me because I think Conley is a better player than DeRozan. DeRozan is probably better with the ball in his hands, but Conley is so much better off ball and defensively, which is where they would spend most of their time with Luka. My biggest concern with Conley is durability. Honestly all three are older than I would like, which is why Ball is probably my first choice due to timeline. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Pollyanna Blues - 06-27-2021 I'd love to see us pick up Ball and Collins especially if we could grab Mitchell Robinson as well. Also, now that RC is in Indy, could we possibly have a better chance at Turner/Warren? RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - mvossman - 06-27-2021 (06-26-2021, 01:11 PM)Scott41theMavs Wrote: Trade KP for air and you have the money to go after both. Bye-bye THJ and the full MLE if you go that route, but you might be able to pick up some nice players on tiny deals or trade some of our other, more expendable guys for good players. Brunson for Robinson? You are probably burning at least Maxi and Brunson to get Collins and Lonzo, which means you would have enough cap space to get a center ready for prime time like a Holmes. That team is ready to go, no need to go with a project at center. To be honest, I think I would prefer Maxi next to Collins than a true center (assuming he gets back to what he was pre Covid). That gives you the versatility to go 5 out and gives Collins the room to operate in the paint when desired. I think a 3 man rotation of Collins, Theis and Maxi would be good enough defensively and provide a lot of options offensively. Of course it is a total pipe dream. I would be jacked just to get Ball. Remember when I called you the future of the center position? I meant it. Myles: https://gph.is/g/ajm7Bbo Rick: Let me show you some tape of how I had Porzingis stand in the corner and get out of everyone else's way. You'll be a helluva decoy - just like KP but without all of the complaining about not getting touches. That's the future, man. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - DallasBasketball - 06-27-2021 Not sure about the salary cap implications but if it’s Hardaway vs DeRozen vs Conley that’s actually a tough decision for me. I go with Conley over Derozen for 2 simple reasons. 1. Conley is an excellent 3 point shooter as opposed to DeRozen and will enhance Luka while on the floor. 2. The team is built around Luka and will most likely be filled with 3 point shooters. Conley can run a pick and roll inside-out offense when Luka sits. Also with Conley, Brunson could be traded for another asset. I also like DeRozen and think he’s a bucket getter. If you feel getting buckets and size is more important than 3 point shooting and running the offense than DeRozen becomes more of a higher option. Otherwise, I think you are right, I think Sabonis is the most likely big to leave Ind. Conley will probably stay with Utah unless you ovepray him and he is kind of a stop-gap being as old as he is. I would rather have DeRozan who is younger (31 v 33) and isn't injured a lot like Conley. I agree that Conley's on-court fit is good but I think have 2 guys as talented as DMR and Luka would solve more problems than they create. DMR has such a high floor I think you could trade him pretty easily if the fit isn't there. A lot of people bring up spacing issues with DMR because he doesn't shoot 3's but I think those concerns are over-stated. There are real space-problem players like a WCS player who you totally don't respect beyond 2 feet from the basket. A guy like DMR attracts gravity, just like good shooters including much maligned KP who does stretch the floor. Luka himself creates a ton of gravity because you have 4/5 defenders needing to have eyes on him when he has the ball. Having a 2nd guy like DMR running around (hopefully he would move without the ball) could on paper cause a lot of havoc defensively. Luka doesn't do a lot of off-ball stuff but his defender will always stay home on him bc he is so dangerous as a shooter and playmaker. I haven't watched DMR enough off-ball to know what he does but I imagine they would try to put him in advantageous positions to make the defense scramble. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Pollyanna Blues - 06-27-2021 I would go with Conley if we were deciding between him or DeRozan. Although I feel like it mainly depends on KP if I'm deciding between the two. If KP could come back to or near all star level, then Conley would seem like a better fit playing off ball. On the other hand, if not, DeRozan could be a better fit as a secondary scorer, but you'd have to hope KP would embrace that new role. Winning would solve a lot of problems though. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - mvossman - 06-27-2021 (06-26-2021, 10:53 AM)Chicagojk Wrote: I need to think more if Holmes can play with KP, or will teams just put their PF on KP like we saw in the playoffs and attack whoever guards a wing? I am intrigued with using both as ATL uses Capela and Collins, but need to think more about it. I'm of the mind that you do not want to put a true center with KP. Guys like Powell or Maxi work ok because they can guard the perimeter to some degree. Collins would be a good fit as well. Don't think you want Holmes guarding the perimeter, and you definitely don't want KP doing that. I also don't think you want a pure rim runner like Powell or Holmes with KP on offense. I think at least the ability to go 5 out has a lot of value, especially in the playoffs. Collins would have been a perfect fit from that standpoint, but I think that ship has sailed. Honestly, if KP can't get back to his rim protecting ways, or he is unwilling to run pick and role when the situation calls for it (he was actually effective the rare times he did it) then he will never be worth near that contract and we need to move on. Utah is right at the tax already so they might not be able to make a serious offer without dumping salary elsewhere. Someone posted a stat a while ago showing who has the toughest defensive assignments and who has the easiest. Both Luka and DeRozan were two of the most hidden/protected defenders in the NBA. That is going to be tough to cover for. You are going to want two defensive minded wings and an anchor in the middle to support that. Neither KP or THJ fit that description. I feel like you would need to overhaul the roster to make that work (there is an argument that the roster needs overhauling regardless). Also, I just can't get over his career on/off numbers. A guy who's teams are regularly better when he is off the court does not scream to me 20+ mil a year. |
