Carlisle said Noel was not disciplined enough to play defense. Randle had a reputation for being an awful defender. Yet the Knicks had the best team defense during the regular season, because of their coach. All we have is a defensive championship belt. Guess it makes some sense to hand out a wrestling belt, cause our defense is as real as pro wrestling. A large part of that defensive problem is also that as usual our roster has the IQ and athleticism of Einstein. They all know how to hypothetically play perfect defense, but none of them have the athletic ability to make the correct plays consistently during a game at all, because they don´t have the footspeed or energy to do it. One concerned I raised was the game possibly passing by Carlisle´s ideas from 2010 and the lack of athletic ability/fitness could be a huge factor. Josh Green (much like Justin Anderson) has proven that even as "worthless" offensive players they can raise the ceiling of the five players on the floor, just because they play so much harder than the other guys. We simply ignore the fact that TRYING is the 1st thing of defense. When Richardson ball-watched SGA miss a lay-up, fall out of bounds, re-establish possession, grab his own offensive rebound and make the lay-up, I would have benched him for good. That one play summed up Richardson as a Maverick. Wish it was Casey, who got fired, not Stotts. We need him a lot more than an offensive mastermind. Lavine will be looking to leave to go win and he's got the same agent as Luka. Guess it makes some sense to hand out a wrestling belt, cause our defense is as real as pro wrestling. Not sure Thibs is a guy you should be using as your model. He has a history of beating his teams into the ground, over achieving during the regular season only to disappoint in the playoffs. Green has a long way to go before he "proves" anything on the court. And the few sparks he has shown that got folks a little excited were offensive in nature (his court vision and ability to execute a pass) as its been shown time and again that it does not matter how good your defense is if you crater the team offensively. The reality is we only have a few good defenders and no elite ones. Coaching and "trying" can improve a defense, but you have to have something to work with. We need somebody to take some pressure off of Luka offensively, but as shown in the post you responded to, the offense was not really the problem. The real issue was the defense, and more than anything we need a couple of guys who can play good defense without mucking up the offense. His shooting fell off but part of that is his shot selection. I like his assists numbers. I think his elite all-NBA defense, playmaking and toughness outweigh the outside shot. I'd like to know his catch and shoot numbers vs his overall 3%. My theory is that they are better. I suspect the shots he has been taking are more like THJ sorta open shots vs Maxi, DFS no one in 6 feet of you catch and shoot shots. He shot 40% overall from catch and shoot and 40% from 3. 130/323 and he had 327 shots in catch and shoot situations total lol. Basically he's a 40% shooter overall everywhere because he shoots a tooooooon of 3s. Yes, if he still had 2+ years on his deal, the Bulls would be in more of a position to dictate terms and timelines. But the fact that he only has a year remaining on a deal with a team who, even with cap space, doesn't scream "contender", I think it's possible. Especially with a common agent who wants to make his uber superstar client, Luka, happy. If back channels motivate this deal, I think Brunson, Kleiber and Richardson for Lavine gets it done. Also remember that a big part of the problem we are trying to solve is a playmaker that can run the offense when Luka sits. Yes Luka does need shooters but he also needs to be able to rest for 5 minutes and not be down 10 points when he check backs in. Smart is an underrated passer imo. Mavs did not have that. J Rich is a total mess and not comparable to Smart. Brunson is a scorer not a passer. Smart would also bring some intangibles that you can't put a price on. Do you think a Mavs team that has Smart on it is going to be soft? Not happening. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - StepBackJay - 06-07-2021 Seeing as how we were playing Boban in critical playoff minutes how about Steven Adams who is a much more well-rounded player? His fit with Zion was not the greatest. I think his contract is actually pretty good and he's still only 27 believe it or not. I could see Mavs swapping some contracts to get Adams. But the issue with Smart is he's going to hurt you offensively. We have offensive and defensive problems. Smart is the fix when you need that defender. Especially with a common agent who wants to make his uber superstar client, Luka, happy. That's not going to be remotely close. The going rate for all star caliber players has been 3 first rounders plus swaps. Each situation is different and he may cost less... But I think the equivalency of 3 first round picks is at least a minimum starting point. I think Brunson is worth a 1st FWIW. Brunson, 2 1sts, Green I think would be a good starting point. The issue tho is 2025 and 2027 1sts don't really do much for anyone nor do I think the Mavs want to go that route yet of exhausting all 1st rounders to trade for the next decade. I think KP has legit value despite the narrative here. We have enough to get in on that trade if KP is traded to a 3rd team. But I think a trade like that is more likely at the deadline if the Bulls still suck and KP is still here (and healthy). RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - jesusshuttlesworth82 - 06-07-2021 Steven Adams is a good locker room guy. Isn't that the Mavs #1 criteria for new acquisitions? Also, I thought his contract was worse than 2/$35 for some reason. Sign me up for Lonzo, Adams for KP. Tell the Pelicans you're giving Lonzo a max offer sheet to scare them.
