RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - omahen - 04-24-2021 I think Mavs need to bring in real talent. Not just replace ok but limited players (JRich, THJ) with similar ones (Graham, for example). Hopefully that "real talent" would come in the 23 mil range. Name we didn't mention lately but would be great for our needs is DJJ. Limited offense but great defender. Big wing we need against Kawhi, Leron and similar. I would play him behing DFS and Maxi taking their minutes as third wing. I would still look to trade/dump Powell to acquire bench shooter, either resign THJ or bring someone like McDermott. Luka, Brunson Lowry, Green DFS, McDermott Maxi, DJJ KP, BaE, rMLE RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Chicagojk - 04-24-2021 I think Graham would be a tricky fit with team morale. Sometimes these things don't matter, but when they do it can really cause trouble. For instance, are you starting Graham? How would Brunson react if you give Graham a starting role and give him a big contract? While Brunson who has been the better player would still be on his rookie deal and coming off the bench. I think that could lead to trouble. Maybe not. Luka did give Graham props last year as deserving of most improved player. I don't know a lot about Monk troubles or have I given him a close look to his game. Can he defend? I liked him in the draft and he has had games this year when he has put up monster numbers. In other games, he gets 15 minutes and doesn't show much. I think he has one of the best looking jumpers in the league though. Just really smooth. It will be interesting to see what type of offers he gets this year. If he can defend, he would be nice in Dallas. I don't see it happening though, but he is a guy who could really be on the verge of going up a level or two. But I am probably not the best guy to evaluate because I just haven't seen him too much. You only need so many guys shooting 7+ 3's a game. A good defensive 2/3 off the bench like Danny Green or James Ennis would be a better fit and would free up some money to address the 4 or 5. No question it's time to move on from THJ. I would play him behing DFS and Maxi taking their minutes as third wing. I would still look to trade/dump Powell to acquire bench shooter, either resign THJ or bring someone like McDermott. The only "real talent" they have a reasonable chance of bringing in are Lowry and Conley, who are mid 30's point guards that will cost well over 20 mil. I would be good with either guy, but there are arguments to be made against and we may not be either's first choice of options. I understand the trepidation with Graham, but he is a young still improving player who is already better than JRich and would make a lot of sense if the big names are not an option. Don't think we are going to be able to dump Powell that easily. What assets are you giving up? I don't think anybody is going to take on that contract for a second round. Do you want to give up a first to dump his salary? DJJ is currently making the MLE with a player option. If he declines he will be expecting to make more than the MLE. I am out on that for a guy who's offense is that bad. Rick wont play him. I like McDermott for a cheap THJ replacement. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - loki - 04-24-2021 DJJ really needs to be playing most of his minutes at 3 rather than the 4. He's not a clear starter over DFS, so I don't think he'd consider Dallas. He is also small so fit with Brunson is questionable. His offense is actually worse than THJ as far as shooting/scoring goes and I am not really convinced he is a better defender. Graham is a lateral move at best and he will likely be more expensive than THJ. I am not a fan. (04-24-2021, 03:54 PM)mvossman Wrote: Don't think we are going to be able to dump Powell that easily. If we don't think Lowry is a guy that lifts us to contender status, then I wouldn't sign him. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - StepBackJay - 04-24-2021 (04-24-2021, 03:54 PM)mvossman Wrote: I like McDermott for a cheap THJ replacement. The secret is out on McDermott. He is not going to be that cheap. I would imagine he is a full MLE guy and it's really a matter of years he might be a 3 year, MLE guy which isn't bad. We have to prioritize a bigger name player first. Mavs are definitely not going to give up assets to dump Powell. If Mavs do keep Powell I don't think their big rotation is that bad. I'd rather spend money on other positions, namely guard and wing. As much as I like Boban he is too niche of a player to keep for more than vet min. I would rather have someone else pay him money. KP/Maxi/Powell is already an okay start to the rotation and maybe another cheap big to two. I know we all like Theis but he will probably get more money than the Mavs want to spend. I don't believe Mavs want to spend money on a center like Holmes if KP is on this roster. Powell is a useful player and has been getting better as the season has gone along. I expect him to be back to near full strength next season. The reference is assuming we land one of the priority guys and don't have the space for THJ, then McDermott could make some sense. A Lowery/McDermott off season would make some sense. The fit with Brunson is a concern. If he is more than THJ, I am not interested. If we are going to burn a first to improve I would rather do it in a trade for a player than to dump Powell in a limited free agency. Sure, trade is also an option. But I don't think free agency is that limited in a "little above MLE" class. Here is why I think Mavs have to consolidate roster. Combined salaries for players that play less than 20 min per game . I set this value to represent a margin between fringe and rotation players. Contenders vs Dallas: Brooklyn: 8 mil (due to all injuries to their stars reserves play more) Denver: 20 mil LAC: 18 mil (Kennard just barely missed 20 minutes, Rondo also) LAL: 12 mil Mil: 17 mil (Tucker takes half of this) Phi: 13 mil Pho: 19 mil Uta: 17,9 (more than half is taken by Favors) Dal: 42 mil! As long as cap is wasted as it is it will be real difficult to compete... Powell might go back to 20mpg which would help that numbsr but frustrate this board. If Powell rejoins the 20 mpg club then you have potentially 6 guys under contract that are top 8 rotation players and a lot of cap space to add two more major rotation pieces. The other guys are on cheap deals. Let's say you get a Lowry or DDR for 25 mil, then you spend the rest on the best wing you can get. The rMLE would likely be used to add another big or keep WCS. We still need to add at least one high minute player next year, no matter if we keep JRich/THJ or replace them/one.
