Will playoff standings be decided by win % or what?

That's gonna really hurt teams that had hard schedules during the season, but had a chance to close out against softies...oh well. Plus, older teams need the time to ramp up. Not sure 8 games will get it done.

Eh, there is no perfect way to go about this.  Just the fact that the season will continue is nothing short of a miracle.

The 14 NBA Lottery teams would be the eight teams that do not participate in the restart and the six teams that participate in the restart but do not qualify for the playoffs.  These teams would be seeded in the lottery and assigned odds based on their records through games of March 11.  The 16 playoff teams would draft in inverse order of their combined records across regular-season games and seeding games.

Mavs 5th in the west.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. It is what it is. Just glad to have basketball coming back.

In a statement Thursday night, Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle, president of the NBA Coaches Association, said he spoke with Silver, who admitted he might have jumped the gun with his comments.

"The health and safety of our coaches is first and foremost. It's entirely possible that an NBA coach in his 60s or 70s could be healthier than someone in their 30s or 40s," Carlisle said. "The conversation should never be solely about a person's age. Adam assured me that we would work through this together to help determine what is both safe and fair for all of our coaches."

Pretty much. This season is going to have a big fat asterisk on it no matter what they do. Still good to have basketball back in under two months even in what will be a jarringly different form.

Short answer. Yes, some teams will end up playing more games than others so winning % will factor into the seeding

https://www.nba.com/nba-returns-2020-faq

As I understand it from reading this link the rules are as follows:

-The 22 teams that are 6 games or less out of playoff contention get to resume play. So Charlotte, Chicago, New York, Detroit, Atlanta (farewell Vince), Cleveland, Minnesota, and Golden State are already finished for the year
-Each of these 22 teams will be scheduled to play 8 more regular season games
-The top seven teams in each conference will be seeded on record
-The 8 seed will be subject to a play in series if the ninth seed is four games or less behind the 8 seed
-The play in game would be a best of two series meaning the 9 seed would have to beat the 8 seed twice to advance to the first round. The 8 seed would only need to win once
-From there the playoffs go on as normal

Based on this the top 6 seeds in each conference have now clinched playoff spots. We would almost have to lose out and Memphis would pretty much need to run the table for us to relinquish the 7 seed and fall to the play in series because we're 7 games up on them.

Seems to me that we should just play our main pieces 24ish mpg. To try to get some chemistry back while limiting injury possibilities. Likely stuck at 7th anyways. I think this whole situation helps us too.

Need to play them enough to shake off some rust, though I'd be particularly careful with KP. Getting up to the 5 seed isn't out of the question. 4 or above is probably a tall order but there's not going to be any home court advantage for the top 4 teams anyway with all of the games being played at Disney world with no crowds. Well ok, maybe the Magic have home court advantage of a sort because it's in Orlando but...

The new standings are as follows

West:

1. Lakers 49-14
2. Clippers 44-20 (5.5 games behind)
3. Nuggets 43-22 (7 games behind)
4. Jazz 41-23 (8.5 games behind)
5. Thunder 40-24 (9.5 games behind)
6. Rockets 40-24 (9.5 games behind)
7. Mavericks 40-27 (11 games behind)
8. Grizzlies 32-33 (18 games behind)
9. Blazers 29-37 (21.5 games behind)
10. Pelicans 28-36 (21.5 games behind)
11. Kings 28-36 (21.5 games behind)
12. Spurs 27-36 (22 games behind)
13. Suns 26-39 (24 games behind)

East:

1. Bucks 53-12
2. Raptors 46-18 (6.5 games behind)
3. Celtics 43-21 (9.5 games behind)
4. Heat 41-24 (12 games behind)
5. Pacers 39-26 (14 games behind)
6. 76ers 39-26 (14 games behind)
7. Nets 30-34 (22.5 games behind)
8. Magic 30-35 (23 games behind)
9. Wizards 24-40 (28.5 games behind)

Curious to see how this plays out w/without fans, playing what essentially would feel like a scrimmage. I wonder if they ease up on this and open up play in their own facilities after a while. The entire thing would seem so lifeless...

That 8th spot in the West  Exclamation  Memphis has a nice grip on it but those teams are almost in playoffs from day one.

My forecast is that Memphis will keep #8 spot, but lose the play-in games. Healthy Portland is most serious candidate for #9 with Pels being second.

Mavs haven't been in the playoffs since the 2015 season. Feels really good to get back with an exciting young core of players.
